My Crankshaft pulley is rust-bloomed and needs replacing, the amount of sanding to get it ok isn't worth the time. I have the replacement, but for the life of me cannot get my head around how to actually get the old pulley off. After reviewing the parts catalog, the Starting Dog (hand crank piece) and the large nut appear to be one piece. How is it threaded, reverse or regular?

I have an extra pulley and nut but can't seem to find them... So I am going off a ten year old engine rebuild memory and the fact the dogs on the nut would be tightening to start..... I think it's just a regular thread. I got it off just using an electric impact wrench. Spun right off. But again. Can't remember which thread for sure so tread lightly.....

Impact is the only way to go.
There's a trick where if you can brace a breaker bar against the frame, you can "bump" the starter with the ignition off and make the whole engine your impact wrench. Obviously you don't want to actually start the engine.

Yes. I did this with my'04 disco. SUPER exciting. But worked. I'd zip tie the bar so no smashed body parts..... Definitely bad Kung fu.Quote:

Well I finally got the starter dog off! Tried heat, didn't budge. Tried 1000 foot lb torque impact wrench, didn't budge. Bought a slug wrench on eBay for $40 and 4 hits later it spun free! 2 months of off and on efforts to break that &$<€'er and finally done...now to pull the pulley...
