    Default Hello Noob here with a 77 Series III on the way

    Question for all. I have a 1977 Series III station wagon on the way from the UK. My question is: what basic tools will I need to work on the vehicle. Not power tools but wrenches etc. Do I need to have some whitworth spanners?

    I'm assuming the 77 runs on leaded fuel anyone have any advice on that subject?

    Are 2.5L gas engines (used) for the SIII's available here in the US readily?

    More noob questions to follow as I get my arms all oily.

    You can rebuild the engine with the appropiate valves to burn unleaded or get some fuel additive until then.

    You can use regular wrenches as the only difference between a whitworth fastener and sae fastener is the thread angle ( 55 degrees for whitworth and 60 degrees for sae), the thread pitch is also different(1/2-12 whitworth vs 1/2-13 sae.)

    And find yourself someone knowledgeable to adjust the carb and timing. Many will say they know how, but few actually do. Its not like adjusting a Chevy or a Ford.

    And change all the fluids for fresh new stuff (brake and clutch included) before driving it.

    I had it prepared for shipment by taking it to a land rover specialist and checked out. The carb needed to be rebuilt, the distributor was bad (changed the spark plugs and wires as well) and it needed a new fuel tank. Now it runs and shifts great.

    I thought the answer to unleaded would be a lead additive so thanks for clarifying that. Plan on replacing brake pads, lines and obviously the brake fluid as one of the first tasks.
