    Default Shorland 2.6 L 6 cylinder, 1972. Ticking.

    I am having a loud tick from my intake head. I have adjusted intake and exhaust valve tappet to .006 and ..010, ( specs) twice. What else can I check in the intake head valve side? I had the head gasket replaced two years ago and it started shortly after. It used to idle like a sewing machine. On start up it sounds great, when it hits operating temperature it has a single, rythmetic, annoying, noticeable tick....sorry, posted in wrong section.

    Rod bearing ....

    The 2.6 has a LOT of cast iron in the block and it makes the sound of impending doom seem quiet ...

    Pull the pan and check the bearings , it is not that hard . when i ran 2.6 engines I considered the rod bearings to be a wear item and replaced them every 30k miles ...

    It is BARELY possible that there is some foreign matter or carbon in the combustion chamber but .... check the rod bearings anyway ...

    It is also possible that one of the intake valve springs is broken but why it only does the noise when warm is a mystery ...

    Could also be an exhaust gasket leak.
    Or an out of round cam roller.

    I have ruled out an exhaust leak. A rod bearing, is it possible to use a stethoscope on the block area to confirm before pulling the pan? The engine has only 28,500 miles on it and it has never been run hard (35 mph max).

    Thank you for the help. Sorry I made a dual post. My findings:

    "I found intake number one ticking with the hose,valve cover off, I reduced clearance until the tick stopped, found it was .004 on my feeler gauge. I also found a slighter tick on number 6, reduced and final measured clearance was .005. Adjusted while hot.Thank You, I will drive it around to see if anything changes. " seems feeler gauges can be a ballpark measuremt.
