    72FL64, Land Rover 101 GS 24V One Tonne 4X4

John Craddock, Ltd. used this vehicle in its company logo in 2015. It is soon to be featured in a segment on REV’N TV from an interview done – believe it or not – at a street rod show in May 2016. This 101 was featured in an article in the 101 Club magazine, Six Stud in the UK, May 2015.

    Highlights:

The 101 is powered by 3.5L aluminum Rover V8, originally with twin Stromberg carbs. The engine was rated from the factory at 135bhp at 5,000 rpm and 205 lb/ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. Currently, the vehicle is fitted with a single Rochester 2Jet carb. Two sets of original Strombergs and two manifolds are included in the sale.

The 101 is full-time 4WD, with a vacuum locking center differential, parabolic springs and front sway bar. There are eight forward gears and two reverse. The heavy-duty Salisbury axles, front and rear, have larger half shafts than standard. The axles have a 5.57:1 ratio and this combined with the step down in low range gives an amazing 74:1 low range first gear, nearly twice as low as a standard Land Rover and allows only 7mph at 5,000rpm! Swivel balls are in near perfect condition.

The ride is a bit harsh as you would expect, and the steering effort is high, but the handling is surprisingly good, with little body roll, thanks to the beefy front sway bar and parabolic springs.

With the exception of the Rochester carb, Mallory 12V electronic ignition, new Exmoor High Back seats, 3 point seat belts, new Exmoor Canvas hood and the odd clamps, wires and hoses, the vehicle is completely original. The original green canvas is included in the sale.

When the 24V alternator spools up, it sounds like a gas turbine, very cool! All military convoy lighting works as it should and the cargo bed sides and tailgate can be lowered and/or removed to reveal a flat cargo floor.

All records and receipts from my ownership and numerous spares are included in the sale. The e-parts book, repair manual and operation manual are included. Most ancillary parts are Series III and the 101 Club in the UK has an amazing number of hard to find, 101 only, parts as does John Craddock, Ltd.

The vehicle has been disassembled, stripped of all coats of military paint, both body and frame and the body has been repainted in original Land Rover Bronze Green. Recent new clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing. New brake master cylinder and servo.

Purchased from Ike Goss, Pangolin 4X4, Springfield, OR in early 2014, all refurbishment and maintenance since completed by Lance Christian, Eccentric Auto Works, Knoxville, TN. Lance has been working on my Land Rovers for twenty years.

    My comments about the vehicle:
I purchased the vehicle in March, 2014 from Ike Goss, Pangolin 4X4. During a conversation about SIIA parts, I asked Ike if he knew of a 101 for sale and what do you know, he had one and would sell it. I asked him what was the best thing about it and he said “one coat of paint”. I asked again and he said “one coat of paint”. Not being a military collector, I did not know how important that statement was until I began to look at other 101’s online. Within a week Ike had my check and the 101 was on its way to Tennessee.

When I took delivery, the 101 was not without its problems. Problems that I suspect lead to Ike’s acquisition of the vehicle. A previous owner appears to have disassembled the vehicle, stripped numerous coats of paint from both body and frame and reassembled the vehicle with “one coat of paint” and believe me, it shows. He then ran into one unexpected problem, which lead to its sale.

Original brake servos are NLA and the bakelite diaphragm cracked in the original, rendering the vehicle un-drivable. With an adapter plate from the 101 Club in the UK, a Series III master and servo and a little coaxing from my mechanic, I had a running, driving, 101 in much better condition than any I have seen!

A 101 that gets looks and thumbs up at every traffic light, conversations at every gas pump, is the center of attention at every show, will go almost anywhere and could pull the foundation out from under a house!!!!

Numerous details and six months fiddling later, I’m quite OCD; I have the 101 you see today:

    · New Exmoor canvas hood.
    · New Exmoor High back Bucket seats and 3 point harnesses.
    · Dynamat heat and noise insulation around the engine compartment.
    · Terrafirma rear differential guard.
    · All new instruction plates throughout.
    · New gauge cluster, oil press, oil temp, fuel.
    · All vacuum hoses replaced with high quality German cloth braided hose.
    · Various new camlocks, switches, relays and sending units.
    · New batteries.
    · Reproduction number plates 72FL64 from Tippers in the UK, made on the same press that produced the original stampings for the MOD.
    · Refurbished front grille and Land Rover badging.
    · One new and one restored door top.
    · Military bridge plate. The 101 Club says this is a must have!
    · NOS door check straps.
    · New defroster hoses.
    · NOS rear heater hose.
    · New rear heater vents, not original, but they fit and work perfectly!
    · Acquisition of an original six bolt spare wheel, probably the only one in the US!
    · New shock absorber bushes.
    · New sway bar and steering stabilizer bushes.
    · New MOD marker, tail, turn and brake light lenses.
    · New rear reflectors.
    · Refurbished original wood pickaxe and shovel on bulkhead.
    · New clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing.
    · New brake master and servo.
    · New brake and clutch fluid reservoirs.
    · Some stuff that I have forgotten…………

The vehicle is essentially done, but there a few minor things, cosmetically, left to do:

    · Strip and repaint instrument panel and replace speedometer.
    · Repaint heater box, crinkle finish.
    · Repaint low range lever.
    · Replace mud flaps.

The instrument panel would be the most tedious, because of the wiring, but only a one Saturday job. All the rest could be accomplished in one day, as well, but as with all Land Rovers, you need two people to remove the mounting bolts! One person on the outside and one on the inside!

One last thing that would make this the ultimate beast, visually, would be the replacement of the 9.00r16 bar grips with an 11.00r16 tire. Michelin XL would be my preference, but they are NLA. Coker Tire has a reproduction directional bar grip 10.50r16 that would be my second choice.

    $32,000

    Default Auction Live on eBay

Hopefully the auction below will determine a fair price for this beast. If I get some bidders, I will reduce/remove the reserve. So few sell, it is hard to tell what it is worth............

    Go ahead, bid............
