Thread: Engine Stumbling Question

    Default Engine Stumbling Question

    Hello,

I am new to forums but could use some advice on how to trouble shoot a problem.

My Rangie stumbles when accelerating. The more aggressive the acceleration, the more severe the stumble. The motor will cut out for a second then spring back to life. I cannot reproduce the stumble when the vehicle is in the driveway in "park".

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be all sorts of problems.
When was the last "tune up" done?
    What condition is the cap/rotor?
Is the PCV hose system clogged?

Any of these (and more) can give the symptoms you have described.

    Please advise.

what year? 96 + up (obd 2) you may scan for codes and this will give you a good idea, older i would do a compression test if all are 80psi or higher as les suggested first a tune up,and a fuel filter 2 bottles of dry gas in the tank there may be water or bad gas, and go from there.....

The cap and rotor seem to be in good shape.
It has new spak plug wires.
Not sure about the PVC hose.

I found last night that the vacuum hose that connects between the inlet manifold and the distributor vacuum advance was cracked and non functional.
I replaced it with a new piece of hose and the problem appears to be fixed.
(I was short on time so the test drive was quick)
Is it possible that the little hose could have solved the problem?
    Seems too easy.

Also, I would like to change the fuel filter.
    Where is it???

    Thanks,
    Larry

If that vac line is bad, then the vac advance won't work and it won't run right. On your 95, the fuel filter is in the rr of the car, accessible and visible in the wheelwheel, ahead of the axle, on top of the frame rail.
If the problem persists, check that the cap and rotor are quality ones, the cheap ones don't last and/or work. Also, make sure the plugs are basic/spec'd Champions - the fancy/platinum stuff doesn't do well on these trucks.

Along with my list of other "to do's", I will add the fuel filter, re-check the cap and rotor, check the plugs, clean my electrical grounds, etc..

    Thanks guys for your inputs!
