    Default engine trouble codes

I have been getting repeated engine light codes which equate to misfires in cylinders 1,3,5 and 7 on my 2000 Disco II.

Does the fact that the codes all relate to the odd-numbered cylinders narrow down the likely cause to anything particular??

Do these codes necessarily mean an ignition (electrical) issue or could it relate to air/fuel flow problems on that side of the engine?

Any ideas might be helpful as I try and track this down without spending a fortune.

if you dont see any obvious problem (spark arcs etc), pull the plugs and look at them. If they look good...

I would try and throw some fuel system cleaner in (like techron) and run a bottle or 2 through over a few tanks of gas...

Probably have sticky valves..very common problem..dealer will tell you that you need a valve job..but I found that techron usually cleans it out (ie no misfire codes) for 6-12 months

worth a shot before spending 3-4K on a valve job

    Default Yup

That's also what Robison Service said (sticky valves) but the engine really seems to run pretty good so I will try the Techron solution first.

I wonder what steps you can take to avoid this problem if you are starting out with a fresh engine?

I have 90K on mine right now. I have a second one with 120K but moslty highway miles and it has never thrown a trouble code

to avoid the problem...I just throw a bottle in every 6 months or every oil change.. sure seems to work..sure beats a valve job IMO.. Seems the rover is the only car I have that seems to do this

Everything I have read says that this (fuel system cleaner) DOES NOT WORK. But my experience doesn't reflect that. After being told I NEED a valve job..figured I had nothing to lose...try the techron..the results were instant (well within a tank of gas anyway)..of course this is the experience on my rover.

    YMMV

It may or may not work for everyone..but i think it is worth $10 to try one or 2. Give it a tank or 2 to work.

Of course check the wires, plugs, etc..but if everything looks good..try it ..nothing to lose.

If you try it...get the 20 oz bottle..or dont fill your tank full using the 12 oz bottle..and make sure it is the fuel system cleaner..not fuel injector cleaner (bottles look very similar)
