well this is actually over a few months. I rebuilt my 1954 2.0liter Siamese bore engine; cylinders bored out, new pistons, rings, mains, big ends, gudgeon pins/bushings, cam shaft, camshaft bearings, exhaust seats, exhaust valves,,..
Went to start it for the first time last weekend, it fired up and ran nice for about 10minutes then coughed a few times and stalled. Have not been able to get it to fire more than a few seconds since. Checked fuel pump and it's pumping fuel and plugs smell gassy. Have not been able to figure out where I'm loosing spark yet.

In the last two weeks:
1972 Series III, petrol
-First oil change as owner. New racing oil with extra zinc used! Valvoline I think. Filter canister had some metal in it- uhoh! How long it has been there is anyone's guess. Emptied air cleaner and filled just outside as the entire bottom was full.
-Rebuilt Rochester carb to replace generic zenith that was on it temporarily. Ran terrible until rochester was on again. #48 jet inside. Have an extra #53 but mileage is already bad, left #48 in. Reset timing. Checked mileage. Better. Will have to get an O2 sensor and see if I'm good on the tune. Safety wired throttle screw and installed spring to keep from backing out.
-Filled everything in sight with 90w- some places took more than others, but had probably been a while since checked.
-Working on steering relay- seems to have a leaky seal that causes steering to get real vague after a week following a refill. A larger project coming it seems.
-Washed it! The moss in the window tracks is still present. We don't get many 75 degree days in Alaska, so seemed like the thing to do.
-Replaced a fuse for turn signals.
-Took my wife for her first ride. She laughed. It's a tractor.
Next up:
-Hard pull to right under braking.
-All lights functioning
-Gas gauge
-Reinstall shoulder belts
-Tachometer and maybe a hand throttle
-Wax the paint that is still present and accounted for?
I put an insulating wrap on my fuel line to try and help with vapor lock here in the Texas summer.
Next up for this coming weekend is the annual full fluid change front to back. Diffs, t-case, trans, engine...
80 - what wrap did you use. Can you share results?
1968 Series IIa
1997 Defender SW (Original Owner - Sold)
Sure.
This is what I bought (thermal sleeve) but I picked it up from NAPA instead of Jegs.
So far, so good. And the last few days have been hot here in Texas.
I figured for the price it was worth a shot.
Today I installed a new Interstate battery. The PO had, for some reason, put a deep cycle marine battery in the Rover. Not surprisingly, the Texas heat killed it in this application.
Next week my new hoop set and canvas arrive so I can finally have a soft top!
