What was the last vehicle you purchased without a first hand inspection and a test drive?
I always say your best value for money is to travel there and dedicate the time to find one yourself. Keep in mind you are not the only American looking for one. You have to look where everyone else is not. I am in the U.K. now visiting my in-laws, and it is hard to not go look at every truck I come across that is for sale.
I trust this Land Rover group and you all seem to offer great advice and comments.
What are the best options in a Rover Defender 110. 200 or 300 TDI, V8?
What colors are best if I buy one and may some day sell in the US?
Stan
The 200/300 TDi are highly desirable to the US market because of their incredible gas mileage and longevity. However the 200TDi wasn't used in the Defenders until around 1990, which still isn't legal. I'm guessing you're thinking of doing the swap over there, which is a pretty good idea. I would personally go with a 2/300 over a V8 for sure.
Very true! The TD5 is an awesome and POWERful engine. The only problem is that you'd have to do an engine swap, because the TD5 didn't go into Defenders until 1998.
Putting a TD5 into a non-TD5 vehicle probably is not work the cost. It is a sophisticated engine and would require significant alterations to get it working.
What are the limitations on importing a Deffie with TD5 into your part of the world? The later ones are Euro3 compliant (mine is anyway).
You wouldn't get away with that in this country. But, for now, you can import them. However that will not be for long because of their emissions ratings. For that reason, you can't import old models. Funny how things vary.
