    I was under the impression only the first 80" 1948 Lanides had the RR engine.

    the standard 48 models do not have the RR engine. The military wanted to standardize the RR engine over their range of vehicles (the austin champ was in service at this time with the RR motor) These 81 inch wheelbase land rovers were made in pursuit of that goal.
