I have an Ex-Mod with two weeping gas tanks. The military style tanks seem to be extremely hard to source. I was wondering if anyone had any luck with any other ways to restore gas tanks?

I know POR 15 makes a product. There used to be a company called Forever Rover that seemed to make them, but looks like they are out of business.

Any thoughts?

This was just discussed over at G&R.

I am waiting on the POR-15 kit to address my weeping tank.

Thanks. You mentioned a shop in MA that would restore them... What's the name? I'm on the South Shore.

They seemed straightforward in my conversation with them. I suppose if I didn't just buy a soft top for the 5 door I would be more inclined to go that route. If you don't know what Big Sky Rover's gas tank implies then just imagine your tank with a few extra bullet holes for authenticity. No extra charge for the bullet holes Im sure, but they do add to the character of an ex-mod rover.

I had the same issue with one of the military tanks on my Lightweight, even though both tanks look like new on the inside & outside. I tried contacting Forever Rover as well with no response. See the discussion thread here:

I still have my original two tanks, so if yours are heavily rusted send me a PM. Here are the tanks:

I have coated a couple of motorcycle tanks with the kreem (think thats how its spelled). It worked well but I have heard of some people having problems. I did a very thorough job of cleaning the tank and using the rust remover before putting the coating in.

Clean inner part of the tank. Dump in a couple layers of Red-Kote and turn tank all around to spread it. Clean it out with your favourite solvent and a length of old dog chain and literally shake the crap out of it. Steam clean and use MEK or Methyl Hydrate to take care of any moisture. Make blanking plates and seal using old inner tube as gaskets. I applied low air pressure with a fitting in one to make sure it squished though any breaches while it cured.:thumb-up:

My understanding is that John Gerling (sp?) stated the cost of stainless steel had become so expensive that he could no longer create products at a reasonable price. I was pretty charged up about his stainless breakfasts.
