WHere have you guys mounted the inertia style seat belt retractor in your series rigs. I have a set of inertia belts from a d-90 and would like to mount them in my truck but cant figure out a good place for the reels. Any pics or other setups out there.

I had a three point, inertia setup in the 109" out of an older BMW. It wasn't a bad setup (I took it out when I did the resto and took out the BMW seats). The retractor reel mounted just behind driver's seat. It might be a little bit tighter setup on an 88" as the rear bulkhead could interfere.

mine's mounted to my hardtop, which means no seatbelts when the top is off unfortunately

you could mount the reel on the top of the bulkhead behind the seat. the steel there should be good enough, the only problem is if you are going to take your top off the extra belt length not used to go up to the roof and down might jam the reel.

not the best but it gives you an idea. my seat belts are also out of an older BMW (strange!). They use the brackets which I believe you can buy from Rovers North that fit into the hardtop...

RN used to sell a kit that had all the mounting brackets and reels included. The reels mount on the back of the rear bulkhead using an L shaped bracket. There is also a guide that mounts on the top of the rear bulkhead to keep the belts from rubbing on the galvanized strip. It is a good kit and can be mounted in several hours. I've used it on two rovers now. Occ these kits will pop up on ebay. You might want to check the LR orphanage or LR series on ebay also.

Thompson,

I clicked on the link and it doesn't list any prices only $ (must be expensive).

How much for a kit?

Thompson,

I have seat belts. I have the lowest bracket, I have the upper bracket. What I need is the bracket that the reel mounts to..... NLA...

Suggestions??

Leslie,

That looks like just a piece of thick sheet metal. Should be easy to fab up.

Mostly... but....

It's got a jig of a little step in it, between where it bolts to the capping and then the rest of it sticking above the capping. It's just more of a jig than the sheet brake I have access to can bend on the thickness needed. Plus, there's a little bit to the bottom end where it bolts to the capping. The other option would be, to cut to pieces then weld them together, if I had a welder yet (still on the list awaiting future approval for purchase by SWMBO).

Then there's the finish. It wouldn't match the rest until I galvanized it, and there's a minimum charge @ the galvanizers, so it'd end up being expensive... if I was going to pay to galvanize it, I'd rather have it made right beforehand than half-done.

It'd be nice to have the right parts, already finished for installation, if they were available. I will probably end up fabbing something, but, it'd be worth it to me timewise to purchase, if such were available. So, I was wondering, what RN's recommendation was if I called and said I needed that part....

Good news. RDS has a bunch of them. Just ordered a few for myself.. No need to fab them up.. :thumb-up:

Leslie,

No need for a sheet brake or a welder. Just a right angle grinder, vice, hammer, and drill could make it. Paint with cold galvanizing spray, most of it will be hidden from view anyway.

Ref the seat belt fitting, the one I recommend is the RND100, this includes 2 seatbelts and buckles plus "U" shaped bracket for fixing behind the rear bulkhead. This works well if you have a soft top, having the shoulder anchors in the hard top sides does stop the belts from self tightening as you bounce down the road.

Les,

How much?

Well, I'll ask him, but I don't think he'll be very keen. Uh, he's already got one, you see. Oh, yes. It's very nice.

Les,
Given that I already have a brand new pair of seatbelts, I really don't see spending $255 just to get a pair of brackets, eh? :sly:

And jp, I broke my angle grinder. (You know you're a Series Rover owner when, you've worn out the second one and are too poor to buy a 3rd angle grinder.... :p I think it's time I saved up and got an air-compressor to drive some tools to go along with the welder I'm still needing....)

Now, as long as I don't break this vice, too, I might get by.... :o

Don't buy the el-cheapo models. Spend a few extra bucks and get a good one, you won't regret it. I have an old Hitatchi right angle grinder (about 10 years old) that'll still cut your arm clean off.

I ordered my retractable shoulder belts from Seat Belts Pro for our IIA. Fair price. Brackets came with kit, but the link gets you to individual brackets for sale. I used the first one shown on the web page for the back of the bulkhead to mount the retractable unit. Works flawlessly!

hey, nice link. I bought the kit from wiseowl when I got too fat to use my old volvo belts in the 109. Too much guinness... :gulp:

Then I found these and used them in my 88...

http://www.andoauto.com/retrofit.htm

they work good mounted on the side cappingin the smae location as the OP was planning to use.

the end bracket is a little long but it's only an issue when the seatbelt is not being worn so IOW not an issue. You could pay to have them shortened and still come out cheaper than the Genuine LR stuff.

A Land Rover would never turn up to collect an Oscar. It'd be far too busy doing something important, somewhere, for someone."

While that is true of a Series or Defender Land Rover, being seen at the Oscars and the "important" parties afterwards is excactly the kind of niche the Range Rover marketing folks are targeting.
