    speedometer differences +?

    I can't find anything on the search for this...I bought a speedometer from a series 2a or earlier-known due to coming in a series 2 dash.
    It has 3 bulbs on bottom side -oil pressure, main beam, and cold start. Also reads to 70 mph.
    I got these for the series 3 88, and upon driving around a known distance it seems to be clicking off the miles a bit slow. It seems to do about half the distance but it seems (to me) like the speed is close.
    Long question short: I thought I read the 109s had a different speedo- could this be the reason?
    What is the difference between the two?

    Second! what the heck is this? It came loose from the s3 & I don't have the slightest where its supposed to go.
    about 7" long, 4" high, and bent about 30* on one end.

    The speedo should have a number on it like 1344, 1408 or 1504.

    15xx = 6.50x16

    14xx = 7.50x16

    13xx = 9.00x16

    The 14xx came on the LWB because of the bigger tires used on them.

      Your missing piece is a plate that is riveted to the left side inner wing. It covers a hole near the steering box which provides clearance for the six cylinder exhaust pipe. On four cylinder models, the exhaust goes down, not left, and this plate is fitted to cover the gap.

        speedo

        If memory serves the one with 3 lights at the bottom is the Series III speedo. I think it uses a different cable.

          My NAS 1972 Series 3 Speedometer has the same three lights on the bottom as you described and the number 1536 just under the cold start light, came with 15X6.50 wheels.
          I've had 109 16" wheels with 32" tall tires on my S3 88 and my speedo was never right. I'm switching to a 1964 S2 109 Speedometer that came with the same size tall tires as stated. It should be pretty close now. I also need to get the screw on S2 speedometer cable for it as the S3 is a snap on type.

            Thanks to all-
            the speedo is a 1536 and the s3 came with 15" wheels as you described.
            It now has 32x11.5x15s on it. I'm guessing thats a big part of it.

            *So am actually going faster than its showing?

            Thanks Carlk, I had previously spent 1/2 hr crawling under the rover with the piece looking for a matching spot. As soon as i read that and saw the place i was dumbfounded.

            heres another brain twister of a part I took off but cant put back:

              Is that a part of the rad fan shroud? My guess it goes top, inside, right (as you sit in the truck)of the large square shroud that screws to to the inside of the radiator.

                Looks like you figured out the speedo issue thanks to 'Crankin's' post, but I thought it might be worth adding that the speedo drive gear (at tailend of transfer case) is also type specific to the vehicle's o/a drive ratio and which is also based on the OEM tire size.
                Changing gear ratios in axles & changing tire sizes will both affect the speedo readout.
                There are some companies that make an adapter box for mech speedos to rematch the speedo to the changed ratios - you'd have to google for this info.
                Many aftermarket ECUs have the ability to do this in s/w nowdays.

                Cheers!

                  the second part you posted goes at the bottom of the left wing over steering arm from the box to the relay. The holes in It should align with holes in the wing, rivit it in.

                    I just love that about LR. I cruise along at 50 KPH on my speedo, and it's really 30 MPH on the cops radar gun, and I really feel like I'm doing 60!

                    I think these are GREAT trucks for 17 y/o boys
