    driveshaft noise

How much is normal play in the diffs. When I take off sometimes I hear a clunking noise. I checked the play and there is about an 1/8 of a turn.

Sounds typical to me. When you take off and here that clunk *and* then dont go anywhere. That too will be typical. Then you can drive home in high range and find out how much fun front wheel drive on a series rover is in a turn. It could also be worn u-bolts as well. These should not be re tightened as a permanent solution as they stretch. U bolts should be replaced.

Here is a fun fact. If you can see the hub splines are wearing (there is play between them and the half shafts), you should go ahead and replace your hubs. I've had what looked like and sounded like a half shaft failure, only to find out the splines on the hub had given up and the half shaft was still good.

I don't think it's common but it's probably smart to check for play there while you are looking at the rest of the drive line.
