Frt axle brace... I've seen in it depicted in the LR optional part catalog, How common or rare is it ?

I don't know the heater but I think the motor is installed backwards. Unless you run a hose to the front grill. Does the wing/grill have an intake hole in it?

Yes.. His wing does have a have a metal air intake grate. It might an early IIA model then.

That is a Kodiak M4 heater.

...and the motor is installed correctly. The Mk.IV air intake ran under the battery tray up to the front grill aperture. You'll get a forced airflow at speed and will not need to run the fan.

Best Series heater made...

I have the same heater and the install looks the same as mine. Does anyone know where I can get a new intake hose for it? I believe it's a 10" inner diameter.

My '63 IIA has the axle bracing as well.

thanks,
charles

At least one of my Rovers has that heater and I would be very surprised if the intake hose was 10" in diameter. If RN doesn't carry the hose then a large heater or dryer hose would suffice if you aren't too worried about originality.

Whoops, 4" sorry. I didn't see it last time I looked but I'll check again. Wasn't sure if it needed to be able to withstand high temps etc.

It only has to withstand really high temps if you run it to the opposite side of the engine by the exhaust - which luckily for both time/space and reasons of insane sillyness one wouldn't do.

Luckily it just runs forward from the heater and under the battery box. You will get airflow when driving without the intake tube on.

I am jealous of that heater, and therefor I hate it.

But since you all asked me to join this conversation... on the second picture, directly above the heater's motor is a small bracket welded to the bulkhead. I have that in mine too; what's it for?

This hose is an intake hose and onlyneedsto withstandambient temps + a litttle from engine heat gain.

I believe it is a bulkhead stiffener used on some models.

It attaches (with a ~1/2" diameter rod, threaded a few inches on the end for adjustment) to a bracket on the frame to keep the bulkhead steady.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (and I also have this bracket on my '71- both sides)

The axle brace is a HD rover axle, yes its common on ambies and some armored rovers, some MOD 3/4 tonne 109 rovers had them some didn't. Some early and then late 1 tonnes have them in the fronts, some middles have ENV and Salisburies f&r. I have only seen 1 88 with the braces and it was a Aussie model. It seems it was an option for 109s, but rarely ordered.

The brace isn't rare, it's unneeded on an 88", and will do nothing for the average rover except collect dirt and moisture like the the rear axle. If you have one either take it off or weld up all the seams and drain holes so none of the bad stuff can get in.

By parts rover has a MK4, and i was considering using it instead of my current Mk3, but the parts rover has the wing vent, is it not supposed to if the vent runs under the batt box?

I forgot to take pictures before putting the fender back on, but the hose runs down from the heater, along the frame, under the battery box, and connects to the hole in the breakfast.

My first Rover had that heater setup. There was a hose which ran from the blower to the front of the truck along the frame rail under the battery box and had a screened intake that was attached to the breakfast filling the opening on the passenger's side of the breakfast on the lower left hand side of the truck as you face it.

Yup that's it. I'll take some pictures this afternoon of my shiny new aluminum foil intake hose from Lowes. :)

That's the same heater I had in mine. It is indeed installed correctly and the PO (who had owned it for 30-plus years) used the same type of hose that you would find for a dryer exhaust to connect from the firewall to the spot underneath the battery tray. It was kind of a pain in the ass to put that hose up to the grille when it fell off.

Two pictures from when I restored my '67 (hopefully they come out, since they're hosted on Facebook):

Notice the gray tape on the firewall? That's because the PO put in a second heater to help the first! Sadly it was gone by the time I bought it. It was the round one, whose name escapes me.

In this one, you can see where the tube would snake down underneath the battery and connect underneath the left headlight.

I once had a Bugeye (Sprite, not LR) and found a poly duct hose to replace the paper-wire stock item. Indestructible. It can be found at McMaster-Carr: http://www.mcmaster.com/#duct-hose/=8q9vex

I didn't think to check McMaster! Oh well, if/when the cheap dryer duct gives in, I will.

Here are some pictures of mine.
