I've been testing out a bunch of series III transmissions to get an assessment and I've just installed the last one which has some obvious problems and is pretty much undrivable. Now I have a couple of IIa boxes I'd like to try. If I can use my series III slave by just mounting it in the IIa spot, I'd begin swapping out right now but I'm afraid I won't be able to do that.

Does anyone have a series IIa slave and a III side by side that can tell me if there are any significant differences which would stop you from swapping them out? Looking in the catalog, it appears the IIa slave sticks out a little further down than the III does when mounted.

By the way, this is what a bad transmission sounds like:

Time for me to start answering part of this riddle myself.

I can see the throw out bearing is different but maybe I can find one milling about my parts bin. Still though, the IIa slave I know I do not have. By eying it up though, it looks like it could be a direct swap. What could possibly go wrong.
