I'd originally thought my father's 2a was a 1963. But on trying to recall when we got it the details seem more and more hazy. I think he took delivery in mid 1963, but am far from sure. And no original paperwork has been found (though I think it is buried somewhere).

Having reclaimed the vehicle
I'm told the VIN # will answer the question.
It is: 27402349B

Can anyone tell whether it is 63 or 64....... and what, if any differences were there between the two years?
thanks.

That's a good old short VIN number, like mine but with a different Ser. No. (and mine's petrol).

From it I get:

274 Model: Land Rover, Series IIA
Body type: Basic or Station wagon
Wheel base: 88in
Engine: diesel
Model years: 1962-1971
Destination: Export, left-hand drive (LHD)
02349 Serial number
B Design: One significant design modification
Suffix used from March 1963 till April 1966

Edit: My guess is Early 1964, based on this info: Production Data for Land Rovers: Serial Number Prefix 274, Link: http://www.lrfaq.org/Series/FAQ.S.chassis_numbering.274.html

17 digit VIN numbers started in 1981, before that it was up to the manufacturer.
