View Full Version : Parking brake question - alternate tranny

Hi folks.

I'm finally "fully" on the road w/ my '71 88". I've got a Perkins Prima diesel driving a Defender LT77 trans with a regular Series transfer case. It runs great (and goes like stink compared to stock) BUT, I get this kind of a whuba whuba noise when I'm coasting fast that seems to come from the emergency brake. (Original Series trans brake drum). I tried adjusting the parking brake as usual (about 2-4 clicks back from lock) which doesn't seem to work.

I'm wondering if this could be because I'm trying to use a Defender cable operated brake lever instead of the fixed Series contraption and as such there is no "vertical adjuster" on the plunger side. The action side basically floats there and just gets pulled by the defender cable.

Anyone have experience with this type of combination?? Could that be the cause?? I can't go back to the series P-brake lever because the whole trans and transfer case sits back 2-3 inches. Do I need a different parking brake assembly?? (Hope not)

Sorry for the long winded explanation. Any help, as always, appreciated.
