View Full Version : The Plan...

well, after about a year of deliberation, I think I've decided what I'm doing with my 'too many Rovers' problem (if it can be called that).

My '67 is up for sale...which is kinda sad because it's my first Rover and I have a lot of memories with it.

but...the plan is to use the money from that to pick up a '74 Alfa GTV I've been eyeing. Arguably, in my opinion, one of the best-looking cars ever made. I had a few Alfa's in my early 20's and I guess I've gotten the Italian itch again.

I'll be back in the Rover world with a freshly pieced together '63 Blue Station wagon on the galvi frame, when that project is complete.

so...that's my plan for now. I guess I'm a car-a-holic

Isn't there a salve for that? Maybe an antibiotic?

if there is it would certainly save me some money!

Well, at least your rover will seem like a cheap reliable vehicle with the new perspective :D

ha!

well maybe I was lucky, but my '86 Spider Veloce and '88 Milano Verde were both considerably more reliable than my parents' cars back in the day. Actually they never let me down once...well besides a seized water pump on the Spider, I guess

Have the best of both worlds, put that body on a galvy rover chassis!

It would be a Eurotrash version of those El Caminos that had lifts and huge mudders under them in the 80's!

The GTV is one of my favorite Alfas, but, I had a GTA, so I'm biased. I sold it to an SCCA friend. All he has left is the head (twin plug)

All rust from the inside out and one day the "gotcha" holes appear.:)

Yeah I've had two already - a spider and Milano verde. This will be my oldest

i think its a great idea. the GTV is getting to be a very collectable Auto, and, thank goodness, the Rovers are not there yet. As as far as reliable, that alum 4cyl has been produced since the 40s, still is.
When i'm through with my Landy, next project is a Historic Race GTV that's sitting comfortably and waiting...

I have been looking at adding a gtv project to the list on top of the series. One of my favorite cars of all time. If you haven't done so check out California cars as they tend to be generally more rust free and there is still a reasonable population of them out here.

Thanks for the validation - I've been struggling with this one!

Hard to give up a Rover that you have memories with (but I don't feel good about excess)

Came very close to getting rid of the old girl for an SC Porshe, this past summer. My '69 is the only Rover I have now, so I decided against it, since I would be giving up ALL of my Rover fun.

You sir, on the other hand, would still have a Rover! Get the Alfa and later on, get the remaining Series going, for the best of both worlds. One of the two following sentiments will certainly be stated by you in the future:

"Man, I shouldn't have gotten rid of that '64."

Or,

"Man, I should have gotten that Alfa."

Both are unpleasant, so go for variety! Carpe Diem!

A friend of mine has a '69 Alfa like the one you pictured. Same color, same shape. Love it.

Be daring!

Oh, also, don't you think having more than one Rover is excess?

I appreciate that a lot!

My parents always lived with a 'no looking back and no regrets' mentality. I'm not quite as good at it as they were :)

And hey my blue Rover only needs to be bolted onto my galv chassis and I have another truck right?

I would suggest posting pics of both projects. Of course it might have to be, "Here is a pic of my Rover as I change the intake manifold on my Alfa so that I can add the fuel injection for increased low end torque"

Or even better, how your Rover has helped with your Alfa (more arguments for us not to get rid of Rovers even if we pick up another type of classic!).

I like it! Incidentally the Alfa has SPICA fuel injection (mechanical). That'll be an interesting new mechanical thing to learn...

I know appearances can be deceiving (as anyone buying a vehicle with an aluminium body can attest). But this looks great at first blush.

What is your plan? Maintaining it? Full strip down and rebuild? Undecided. I too would love to see a thread on this.

I think just maintaining and using :)

I'm really excited for the car - I have to admit. It's been awhile that I've had anything but a 4wd vehicle.....throwing a car into corners is not something that is part of my vocabulary anymore :)

Definitely. And with it lower to the ground than a rover, you'll feel like a speed demon! Saw the interview with TopGear on 60 Minutes the other night. Clarkson had one good point. "Speed is the only truly modern sensation". Enjoy it.

Groan... learn to hate may be more appropriate. Look for a Webber head and a pair of DCOEs. There are plenty out there and not a ton of $. That will really make her sing

really? I've read something along the lines of "SPICA was once not well understood due to Alfa using it in racing and keeping the tech somewhat under wraps, but recent knowledge developments have made it an easy system to maintain, increasing mileage without losing any driveability yadda yadda...

My dad had poor luck with an injected Spider, and the dealer wasn't much help. Spica fuel pumps have issues too. I successfully campaigned for a Weber head conversion, but to be truthful, I may have begun to believe the bad rap story I kept giving him. I was always a twin Weber fan, not just in Alfas, but my S1 Elan, and on the track, a Cooper 88 and Lotus 41C. The Cooper was originally Lucas slidevalve injection, which no one could make work well, So Webers won me for life. Clearly, 45DCOEs back then were made to a quality level the 34ICH isn't.

I guess I never wrapped this thread up. These pictures should be an indication of what happened. My cousin's husband ended up buying it instead of me, and we drove to Louisville to pick it up....he's still got a gray one if anyone wants one :D
