funny noise when engaged in 4wd ex-mod 109

Greetings,

When i put the rover in 4wd i get this funny thumping noise when i engage the clutch once it it fully in gear its fine thought it was the u-joint but we looked at it and its fine. I keep the front wheels locked all the time to keep lubricated.
I do not get this noise when in regular drive and only as the clutch is being let out and some times it makes no noise at all??
So is this just part of roverdom or is an impending failure, just do not want to get into the woods and have something go!

sure , the handbrake was rubbing a little and can only hear it in 4wd, Les at rovers north told me about it went for a drive and can make it worse by applying hand brake in 4wd.
