Does anybody have an old Rovers North catalog lying around ? I'm referring to the old catalog not the Rovers Magazine. I heard they are not printing them anymore.

Did you hear that from RN?

Good morning, we no longer print the catalog for Series and Defenders or the Discovery and Range Rover. We have moved those to our web site. We do send out the Rovers News every 6 to 8 weeks, which is a news letter and catalog combined.

BAD NEWS!!

A hard copy catalog/reference is one thing that set RN apart and made me more likely to do business with them. Web catalogs, no matter how good, are clumsy by comparison. Going to a web catalog was a big reason I quit working with the big outfit in CA... I guess the playing field is leveled again now.

God that sucks, the web catalog is useless when I am on the road or in the garage.

The news/catalogs...while not as good as the full catalog are pretty good. The great thing about a catalog is that you can look through it and you often see things that you might buy that you otherwise do not see online. Online I am looking for something specific and I go for it alone. Catalog seems like a better chance for side sales.

Even a single catalog with a seperate price list would be good. That way as prices and availability change you could just update the price list while the main catalog would only get updated once a year.

Last spring, when I was placing an order, I asked about a printed catalog, they said they stopped printing them but would look around and see if they could find an old one lying around. They did and sent it to me with a sticker on the front that said "This is only for reference, part numbers and prices may no longer be valid". Might not hurt to call and ask. Maybe they still have some on a shelf in the warehouse. (only for reference though:D)

This is just the point I wanted to make. I'll frequently thumb through the catalog, with nothing particular in mind, looking for things I "need". I'd never do this on a website... in fact, when I do have something specific in mind, I usually can't find it on the website... that's probably just me... but I can turn right to it in the print catalog.

If something has to go I'd prefer to do without the "News" thing. I like it very much but I'd rather see the limited budget spent on a good print catalog/reference. Even if it only came out every other year, or even less frequently, with an understanding of changing prices.

I wonder if the demand is there if they could SELL a printed catalog without prices or with prices as reference only each year- could almost be a collectors item of sorts, contains all the articles from the magazine in a more permanent format. Not hard cover but on nicer paper. The feller who does the nice paintings/drawings of rigs could do a cover etc.

Just a thought. Probably wouldn't make much money.

Well I guess everybodys in the same boat.I would surely buy one ,hell I'd take an old one with coffee cup stains on it.
I'm no marketing genius ,but I know I would definately buy more out of a catalog,if nothing else my extra purchases would probably pay for the printing costs.
I'm sure we all get a Northern Tool & Equipment catalog,I thumb threw mine at least once a week.I buy something at least once a month out of it just because its there.
Anyway, if anybody has a old stack of these on the back of their toilet,I'd sure love a hard copy.

so then is there a difference between the Rovers North 'magazine', 'catalog' and 'news? Is the Magazine the same as the catalog?

If so, then that means that this: http://www.roversnorth.com/store/t-downloadsrnnews.aspx is not available in print?

"The Rovers North News" was renamed to "Rovers Magazine" sometime in the last year or so. It is still a magazine & catalog combo. The link you provided is to the electronic edition of "Rovers Magazine", but they still send out print copies.

The catalog they're referring to was the comprehensive catalog for Series/Defender Rovers that they also used to offer. It seems I must've gotten one of the last ones as well when I bought my truck a year and a half ago. It's a nearly indispensable part of my growing repair book collection as it's ideal for quickly flipping through for parts, names, and where things are.

I can't count how many Rover owner's houses I have been to where the RN catalog was reading material in their bathroom. You can't do that with an online catalog.:D

Speaking of older RN catalogs- if you are lucky you can get one of the old ones that used Land Rover part #s rather than RN's Part # system.

Anyway I think the loss of a printed catalog is one more blow to sales. If I am going to go online I am nore likely to make comparisons to other online suppliers and honestly less likely to use RN. I can just as easily order from Rovahfarn, RDS, LR Series or anyone else online. The catalog was one thing that really made RN stand out from the rest.

No restoration credit program anymore, no catalog, there is little incentive for loyality to RN as a primary supplier.

BAD NEWS!!

A hard copy catalog/reference is one thing that set RN apart and made me more likely to do business with them. Web catalogs, no matter how good, are clumsy by comparison. Going to a web catalog was a big reason I quit working with the big outfit in CA... I guess the playing field is leveled again now.

First a quick suggestion: Since the on line catalogues from that "big outfit in CA" is in Adobe acrobat format, a current colour hard copy of their catalogue is as close as your printer. .pdf files are fully formatted and print out just the same as if they sent you a paper catalogue. And they are in colour whereas a pre printed paper catalogue would be in B&W.

That "big outfit in CA stopped printing and distributing paper catalogues for multiple reasons. Chief among them are:

Land Rover and the major suppliers frequently change their part numbers for an item. BP uses LR part numbers and third party part numbers instead of inventing their own part numbering system. Meaning a paper catalogue would have obsolete numbers in it before it gets out to customer hands.

The only way to have prices in a catalogue is to take a best guess as to what the price might be during the functional life of a catalogue and set a price for a part that reflects what you think the price is likely to be.

New parts get added and go NLA all the time. A paper catalogue will have NLA parts and will be missing new additions.

And very importantly, not only do they take a bunch of hours to assemble for printing (paid employee labour) but each copy of the catalogue costs money to print. Money that comes from the profit for each part purchased. you pay for every copy of a catalogue printed through increased part price. By not printing a paper catalogue a part markup can be lower and you save money on each part you purchase.

Paper catalogues are not free nor are they up to date.

The "big outfit in CA" chose to go with the Adobe Acrobat format because Acrobat reader is free, is not platform specific and importantly because the online catalogue can be easily printed so that you can have that copy out in the shop or in the truck when you take a trip.

The difference between a .pdf catalogue and a paper catalogue is that the pdf catalogue is current when you down load and print it. You personally pay for the paper and ink of each copy you print by purchasing printing materials and not as part of the purchase price of each part you purchase.

Either way you pay for the paper catalogue you get. usually way less if you print your own.

A full colour pdf catalogue you print out yourself will be nicer than a B&W pre printed catalogue that will be out of date when it gets to you and will cost you more though increased parts prices.

It is a trade off. The big Outfit in CA thinks customers prefer lower prices. I suspect the big outfit out East thinks the same as well.

I'd still prefer a properly printed and bound catalog to a sheaf of paper from a home printer. If a mailed catalog is out of date as soon as it is printed then so is a home printed catalog. Everyone knows prices change as does availability, that is why I always ask for the current price on something when I call to order.

Not to mention- despite what people may think not EVERY land rover owner has a computer and printer. Some are downright luddites, not surprising considering their choice of car.

If you build a breezeway to the outhouse does it then count as indoor plumbing?

We once convinced a girl in college that the Michigan UP still didn't have indoor plumbing back in the early 90's. It was pretty funny.

Why not just buy the official Land Rover parts catalog? That's what I did years ago and it's massively reduced the frustration level as I look for some ridiculously random little part. If you punch those official numbers into RN's site, you'll get their part number if it's available. Someone wisely cross-referenced the parts with the RN ones. As for the UK operations, most still seem to use the official part numbers, so that's an easy route too.

The exploded diagrams in the official catalog are worth their weight. Rovers North site is OK, but they can't match the detail of the diagrams and the extent of diagrams in the original catalog. Last I knew, you could buy the publication from RN. I'm sure you still can.

Yup, they're listed in Books, Manuals, and CD-ROMs (http://www.roversnorth.com/store/c-760-books-manuals-cd-roms.aspx) (for Series vehicles).

Why not just buy the official Land Rover parts catalog? That's what I did years ago and it's massively reduced the frustration level as I look for some ridiculously random little part. I have the ''bible'',the parts book, the optional parts book and various other books .I was just looking for another Rover related item the I didn't have.
Hands down the original parts book is the $hit .
