I've seen a few theads on the subject but nothing definative. I have.a "standard" bonnet not the deluxe version and I'd like to have a spare on it. How can I go about using the one I have with the spare tire on it? I know the parts are NLA, but have you all found another way of doing it? Are the Defender versions still made and if so will they fit a S2a? Thanks in advance!

You just need the pie plate, 2 bolts, 2 clamps, and 4 rubber bumpers. Might pop up on ebay or a parts truck somewhere.

I may have a complete setup for you. Pie plate, bolts, rubber bumpers. They all came off a series 3 standard bonnet.

I also have a deluxe that is dished if you would like. PM me if you're interested.

My truck has the two threaded holes aligned perpendicular to the windshield... Will all that stuff work for mine?

I think I may have all that on my rear door... Now if I can get it to run for longer than 30 minutes. Just got stuck on a 4 lane.

What are the symptoms? The cold weather being like it is in Alabama... Could be the carb

It is a combination of the carb, fuel pickup getting clogged, and fuel filter getting clogged. Ive already dropped and cleaned the tank, just couldn't get everything out. So I try and change the fuel filter pretty often and clean it out that way. I will probably have to drop the tank again.

I just had my curiosity jogged. For the past three years I have made the bolts and spare tire thing work by only using one bolt. the PO didn't have the correct parts so I have never seen how it is actually supposed to be. Can someone take an aerial shot of the correct way to mount the tire to the bonnet using the bolts?

That would be awesome, I need to order a wheel and buy a tire as well, but i would really like to see a picture of the setup. You ever make it down to Auburn Crankin?

I was there for the Clemson game. Its about 4 hours in a regular car...I am sure that it would turn into a 8 hour trip in the rover.

If you have a lot or rust in your tank as I did in a truck years ago. I went to my oel furnace man & got an oel furnace filter & mounted it to the frame ahead opf my ele fuel pump...They are much LARGER & take a longer time to restrict fuel..

not sure if this is correct, or if this'll help you... but here's how my spare was mounted from the PO.

Nothing from the rear door spare mounts goes on the bonnet mount.

looks like you have the longer hold downs. They are mounted upside down. This was probably done that way because they are for a fatter tire/whell combo (usually military application) The typical ones that usually come with standard Rovers, are a bit shorter to accomodate a thinner tire. The idea is that the brackets sit level under the bolt.

Your balance weights are incorrectly placed also, should be on the rim.

The bolt is available from Paddock, Cradock, and others. RDS has had them. It is NOT a 1/2" USF bolt, it is 1/2" BSF, (16tpi) and the head is oversized, same as lugnuts, 1 1/16". It has a long shanks with an antivibration insert in the first few threads.

The Clamp has not been available for a while. I just sold a set last week, and only have one left, which I'm keeping. Lots of the parts people like Don Flye, will have them.

Years ago, I made up a couple dozen clamps and had them galvanized. It was essentially a Tee, made out of 5/16"x2" flat stock, had a tit on each end that fit into three lugnut holes, and had 2 holes that lined up with the two in the pie pan. It was way easier to use than the individual Z shaped LR clamps.

How much are the clamps worth? I could maybe make some if there is demand. Maybe someone could send me some dimensions...

I've got a freshly galvanized pie plate that I'll be installing on my 1969 Series IIa razor-edge bonnet. I can pretty much figure out the location from looking at the photos and comparing the rivet locations, but before I drill holes in the bonnet, I was hoping someone would please provide the measurements to the edge of the pie plate, side to side, and front to back.

Also, I've seen photos where the straight section of the plate was toward the front, and others where it's towards the windscreen. Which is correct?

And finally, I would also like to verify the locations for the round rubber buffers.

Thanks,

Stuart

just wanted to check some opinions on this...
got the new spare tire mounted to the freshly powder coated rims (this was the most beat up rim, which is why it is now the spare). the original mounting was claimed to be incorrect, so if i flip the hold down over, the they still do not sit level, but is this good enough?

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6163/6195584410_8f6c6d7e9f.jpg

also, for those of you who have a larger spare (7.50x16), did you have to move your rubber spare bumpers out so that the bulge of the side wall is not sitting atop the paint?
my bumpers are now inside the radius of where the tire contacts the bonnet.

I have added spacers under the rubber bumpers on some of my hoods, but the 7.50 x 16 tires still seem to rub the hood. Sometimes I add a thick piece of rubber between the wheel and retainer as well to help take up the gap.

thanx jac. i'll have to do something, otherwise i forsee a ring of wear on the bonnet. i was considering ordering another set of four and adding them a few inches outward of where the current bumpers are, which will give two sets. wondering if will look ridiculous or just add another element of "character" to the already busy bonnet.

the ring in the dust above (upper left of photo) is where the new tire sits. it's a good 2-3 inches from the bumper.

It won't look ridiculous because the tire will be sitting on top of it!
