... in response to the attached photo below.

Ian D. (Acton ME, Ser II 88 owner) snapped a pic of a pic hanging on the wall within the Poor Peoples Pub in Wakefield NH.

Does anyone have more info or pics to share about this long ago event ~1986?
RN's own Mark L. was reported as being there in a nifty new 90...

Thanks.. Talbot

Definitely from one of the "Winter Safaris".
I was there one year (maybe 1992) in my restored '63, and 2 other years before that as a copilot.

BTW, if you are looking to kill some time, go to the AW index and start going through the old issues. Classic stuff:

The old Aluminum Workhorse newsletters are a great find. Thanks Jac04. The issue with the info on this Winter Safari is here:

Wow! Ron Mowry....that's a name I haven't heard in a long time now. Wonder what ever happened to his rover junk yard? A friend of mine who got me started on rovers used to get stuff from him quite often. I bought a couple items from him as well. Some of those other names sound familiar as well. The rover world sure is small.

Yeah, no kidding. I bought an 88 chassis from him when I was in high school.

I was thinking of Ron Mowry the other day as well. I was trying to find his old address in West Lebanon Maine. I was going to see if I could use Google Earth to see if any signs of the junk yard at his old farm still existed. Probably not. Before he moved to Poland (must have been in the mid 90's ??), he supposedly "sold" most of his stuff. His plan was to "buy back" certain things upon his return. Unfortunately, he was ******ed during a robbery in Poland.

Either way, Ron is the guy resonsible for getting me interested in Land Rovers. When things were a little leaner, he always let me scrounge though his parts to get what I needed. Some things I bought for a nominal price, but most of the time I would just help him out with things in exchange for the parts.

Funny, I have had a picture hanging on my refrigerator for many years. Didn't really think about it until today. It's the line-up in front of Ron's house for the Winter Safari that I took my restored 63 on. Unfortunately, there is no date on the photo. My 63 is 3rd from the back. Ron's Lightweight, nicknamed "Jack", is first in line. He brought it back from Canada as a bunch of parts from assorted scrapped vehicles (I assume BATUS) and assembled it. You can just make out the license plate JACK and you can see Ron in the driver's seat.

I remember when I went to collect up that chassis, either Ron or his wife Bernie had a Rover named "Jeep Eater". That rover was pretty unusual (in the 80's) because it had a front disk brake conversion.

Maybe check with Matt at Overland, he owns a junkyard of old rovers in that area, maybe he purchased them from Ron? He's on here so he may just chime in.

I stopped by Ron's place once just before I got my 65' Station wagon. Had a neat tour around the place and it is when I found that many Land Rover guys weren't just interested in Land Rovers. Usually they had an interest in some European car. Ron also had Ciroen 2CV's, someone else had Saabs and another was also interested in Rover cars.

Amazing History.... I beleive the Meharis mentioned were part of the LR buy-out that Matt now has. Many months ago, I saw the plastic buggy project cars at a friends house in southern maine. I'm not sure how far he's gotten on them. Matt would probably know. .. Talbot
