Anyone ever seen a plastic, or even aluminum gasoline tank for a 109 (preferrably under rear-end type)? I've searched googs for a while with no luck, but I'm hopeful someone on here can tell me it exists.

That's nice work! Did you make it or did you commission a welder to build it? Reason I ask is that I'm curious--why only a few bends and lots of welded seams instead of a lot of bends with only a few welded seams?

Nice looking tank:thumb-up:.

Thank, the reason the tank has so many wells is we used a thicker gauge where the sending unit goes inorder to give the bolts more to bite onto. When I make some more tanks I will probably try to come up wither some nuts to use instead of the thicker gauge aluminum. We als made the tank wider to gain about 5 additional gallons

I think a year or so ago firemanshort had a factory aluminum tank from a Norwegian 109, so they must be out there. I haven't seen anything in plastic that would work without fabbing mounts and fillers.

That's true, now that you mention it... Here (http://gunsandrovers.yuku.com/topic/4918/Fuel-Tank-Series-109-quot-aluminum) was the link.

In the aviation industry, they rivet these floating nutplates to the underside of aircraft skins for applicatons like yours. Solid aluminum rivets are used. The nut "floats" a bit in the anchor plate so precision alignment with the sender holes isn't necessary:

I'm sorry onecross (more than you'll know actually) but that is one of the sexiest things I've ever seen on a Rover.

I make marine fuel tanks occasionally, what you do is just weld on a thicker alum ring where the sender screws into, easy and leak free. You can drill and tap it before you weld it on, and if you weld the inside of the ring to the tank you don't have to worry about the screw threads leaking.

I totally dig that tank! Did you install baffles in the tank, or does the cut away kinda act like a baffle?

sorry for the hijack amcordo.

Thanks complements and advice on the tank i will be sure to make improvements when i make some more... we put the tank together last minute so that's the reason i didn't have time to make its better.

Thanks, yes there is a baffle similar to the original one works great!

cheers!

Later year 110s have plastic fuel tanks. I bet I can make one fit just fine.

I don't know for sure, but I think you're being a bit optomistic on the fit of that plastic tank. AND, for $400, I think I'd just have a welder do up the correct tank in aluminum or stainless.

Does the 110 have that crossmember back there like the 109?...You know, the one that causes the 109 rear tank to be "U" shaped. I really don't know. Let me try to scare up some photos of a 110 chassis with that tank installed...

You might compare the location of that 2nd crossmember on the 110 and on the 109. I can't see how you could make that plastic tank work with any degree of grace:

Maybe move the crossmember? then you could put any # of different tanks back there...

As Jeff would say, "I'll take that bet". I just changed the tank in my 110 a few months ago, and can safely say, there is no crossmember there.

But if you remove it what's to keep the frame rails from rotating inwards from the force of the leaf spring mounts? I assume the rear cross member would be rusted to bits, aren't they all????:D

onecross, would you consider making more tanks, i'll bet the reward for you would match the need. like, i need one NOW.

Wait...so you mean plastic tanks are NOT illegal to use in a road vehicle??

Good...that makes me feel better.

I've had this crazy problem with intermittant mis-firing that has got me at my wits end...renewed the fuel filter...it ran better for a while...but now is back to running like...well...cow pie.

So am thinking it might be rust in the tank...as rust shows up in the glass sediment bowl. Maybe that has been causing this ongoing problem the whole time.

Getting sick of rusting rover tanks...just replaced this one not that long ago...well 21 years ago (time sorta gets away from me), and here it is rusting again?? What gives? All that Potassium Chloride that they use on the roads in Ak in the winter, I guess...or maybe it's just plain NaCl, but it's nasty.

So am thinking of getting one of those red plastic twelve gallon outboard skiff tanks and seeing if it will fit where the rover tank lives.

Was thinking of painting that red plastic tank black, so that it will not look so obviously like an outboard skiff tank.

But I've had it with steel rover tanks....they should last longer than 21 years, I'd think.
