When in High, the lever pops out after a few seconds. Any suggestions welcome. Runs fine in low and 4wd

Thanks

Are you speaking of the transmission, transfer case or an overdrive?

The High - Low gear. Not transmission.

The High - Low gear. Not transmission.

So for further clarification: When the transfer case lever is in high it pops out into neutral? and are you refering to the red knob or the yellow knob?

If you're talking about he H2/4L lever then chances are the rubber boot is keeping it from being pushed forward all the way into high range 2wd. Loosen the screws, pull the boot up and try it again. If it holds you know it's the boot.

The culprit may be as simple as the gaitor not letting the lever go all the way forward, but more likely the selector shaft spring is weak or broken.

This is the red knob lever. The lever connection into the transfer case is very gunky and dirty. Perhaps a good cleaning will do the trick.

"the selector shaft spring is weak or broken" is this inside or outside the transfer case?

It's inside the front output shaft housing.

This happened to me too on my 72 88, take off the rubber boot thats attached to the floor, now shift the transfer case lever, you should feel the lever position itself in the indents (click into position) if it dosent do this, next check the pivot bolt, its what attaches the transfer case lever to the tranny area. mine had a build up of rust and mud at the pivot point and didn't let the lever go all the way forward. This area is down low and gets alot of mud/dirt thrown at it. Its easy to get at.
