I had my flywheel skimmed at a local clutch place and they gave it back to me with one of the 2 locater stubs busted off, will this be a problem or is it just to help line up the bolt holes?

not sure if it would actually be a problem or not.
My machine shop was unable to remove the pins on mine to skim it so they drilled small holes from the back of the flywheel and then were able drift out the pins.
- just a thought if you wanted to replace the broken ones. -
Take it back and ask them to fix it, they broke it....It's an easy fix doing what Scatterling's shop did. Put both dowel pins in while it's out. You'll have some semblance of balance at the clutch.Jason

I was thinking balance may be an issue. Im going to take it back today, I would think that they have replacement pins? Its a pretty good size shop. Ill mention drilling it out from the other side.
Im curious, is the problem a balance issue or putting it on the right way?
thanks for the info1970 Series IIA 109 EX-MOD

you should take it back and have the pins repaired. While they are in there have them turn off 5 lbs of material or so.Comment

That's probably a good idea for a race engine that needs to rev high and get there quickly but for a rover you want the weight to help keep the crank momentum up. That's what a flywheel is for.Jason

called the clutch place before i drove all the way out there and they said they dont have any dowel pins and that its just used to assemble the car going down the line. Now these are some eastern kentucky good old boys so i dont trust there judgement when it comes to 41 year old land rovers. Im going to go to a few places around here and see if i can get a replacement pin, Good news is they managed to get the broken bits out. Thanks for all your help folks1970 Series IIA 109 EX-MOD

I couldn't find a dowel pin at any of the shops around here so i tried to make one out of an old bolt on the lathe and it came out great. Problem solved, and yes it is a stepped pin.1970 Series IIA 109 EX-MOD

5 lbs isnt that much for a rover flywheel. It will reduce some of the rotational energy stored in the spinning flywheel but it will help with road driving performance and it won't hurt in the woods either. Its something to consider especially if you are trying to bump performance by going to an efi system.Comment

the dowel pins are to assist in alignment. I have assembled some cars without the dowel pins without issue. ...but you could have a slight imbalance problem if things are not lined up perfectly. For replacement dowels check out your local hardware store that has a good selection for nuts and bolts. Otherwise take a look at www.mcmaster.com ...they will be a little more expensive but have a good selection.
