The radiator cap on my '60 SII has disassembled itself. I peened the corroded stud over twice but it has failed again. The catalogues from our host (and others) list caps for later cars. Are they different and can I use a newer one?

This is a guess but I think that you can. I think the difference between a SII cap and a later one is that the later one allows liquid back in as the engine cools.

the caps are different, the earlier ones are bigger

When I had my ser1 large cap rad recored, they put on a large cap neck with a large cap used on grader/ industrial stuff. Recirculating one too to keep air out. Looks the part and works better than new.:thumb-up:
