    Lots of Whitish/blueish smoke

And this is my other issue. Also started with the tappet adjustment which I thought I did very carefully. Having previously had very little smoke I know get a cloud of white blue smoke on starting and it is clearly continuing to burn oil. Should I presume that I misadjusted one or more valves and this is causing this? Not quite sure of how that would work but it did start at exactly the same time. Or should I be looking for something else and this is just a coincidence.

What else would cause a sudden smoking and oil burning problem coincident with tappet adjustment? It is a low mileage engine (30k) that has run very tight. Compression is also good. Thanks for any thoughts.

It would help if we knew what engine you were talking about. A malfunctioning valve will cause smoking. You might want to take the valve cover off and recheck your work.
