Rear main oil seal

I know this subject has been nearly beat to death on this site BUT since it is an issue, one more question: What is "jointing compoud" as stated in the Green Bible? I am assuming (yeah, I know) that it is sealant for where the retainer halves mate up. Is this right? Is there a good 'local' brand? Or am I way the h--l off base? Thanks.

Fill up the oil and check the gas.
