have '66 109 station wagon with 2.25 petrol, solex carb.

when in neutral or with clutch in she runs fine at idle and under gradual / light acceleration.

however, when in neutral - under fast acceleration she stumbles and backfires.

also stalls when clutch is released and placed under load.

once on road and running at higher rpm's, runs fine with no issues.

any help would be appreciated.

When was the last time you cleaned and set your points?

Could be vacuum advance, or a leak in the line thereto. Could also be in the carburetor diaphragm, or related linkage and/or jetting.

we checked everything we could think of, ultimately caved in and pulled the distributor which was off by 180 (by some PO).

we'll be back on it in the morning and hopefully timing adjustment will solve issue.

Check your fuel pump. I had same issue. Mine was the fuel pressure regulator that had gone bad creating the exact same conditions.

Sounds like you could get lucky... when I once lost power under load, turned out a blown head gasket between 2 & 3... much rather a 180 problem
