I was looking over that thread but I would think a single motor is a bit different than an entire container filled with various product..

Be better if you have someone you trust check it out before sending $$. I would not infer that I don't trust all of our Brit cousins, however I don't trust them all, all the time:)

Rejeep-

Reread your post. Did you mean motor as in engine or motor as in car? Car I can help with!

Cheers,
Julian

oh that’s funny...
didn’t really think about the interchangeable term..

I am in planning stages now for what to do in terms of a swap..

No problem.

Please share what you learn. Not for my Rover, but I have always kicked around shipping over a completely rebuilt engine for my Imp. Wondered what costs to ship a (very small) engine would be!

Cheers,
Julian

Why go to the trouble? If it's just a regular engine, you should be able to score one over here. I guess could be a different story if truly a turnkey, but I'm assuming you'd be buying from an ebayer who is just stripping down an old land rover. just my perspective, admittedly.

Yeah....just put a handle on it!

Actually, a good friend of mine has been working on British cars for years as a mechanic.

He still has family over there, so sometimes he would come back with parts-some very large-in his suitcase. Told me a story once of Triumph Stag heads in his suitcases....and the subsequent metal detectors :D

You are going to have a tough time finding an eBayer in the UK willing and able to ship an engine overseas. The packaging can be an issue, US Customs won't allow the use of wooden pallets.

You might try Richard Scribens, http://www.cws4x4.co.uk/

He isn't cheap but he has the ability to send you an engine or whatever else you might want.

Which engine are you searching for?

I am looking for, or rather should say pricing out, a complete Defender 200TDI motor with all the ancillaries.

You could have ACR or Turners or any shop that exports to pack it for you. It will be bolted down, and use the heat treated wood that complies to customs regulations. Any of the export warehouses could also do this for you.Expect to pay about $300-$400 or so for the crate service. UK customs will want a photo copy of your passport, or drivers license, which is required for any motor export, to keep stolen parts from leaving, and will need to fill out 2 US forms. I am not sure how you will do it with the TDI motor, as it is supposed to be a direct replacement motor ie 2.286. If it is a lot of parts, it may be easier to get it past customs?

You might look into landroverimport.com. Duncan has been highly recommended to me, and while I haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet I plan to Real Soon Now(tm).

If you can find someone bringing a container over you can sometimes find room in it and economically bring your engine over. I know of a few that have come over to NY/Ontario recently. It might be worth asking around. :thumb-up:

In a container, crated it's around a cubic meter in size give or take a bit. Not sure of east coast rates, but last container to west coast was $210 a cubic meter.

I just ordered a turn key 200tdi from here:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DEFENDER-DISCOVERY-200-TDI-300-TDI-RECONDITIONED-ENGINE-/260580764214?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cabd2ea36#ht_1326wt_1187

Martin was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I wanted to do a 200tdi with a 300tdi turbo. This made for an easier swap into my SIII 109 (bolt on existing mounts w/o turbo fouling the chassis). Add a Steve Parker exhaust specifically for this configuration and I'm hoping for a relatively easy swap.

I'll be able to tell you more in a couple of weeks when I have mine in hand.:thumb-up:

Interesting... I saw that, but it didn't lo turnkey to me.. Does he offer different options..
I'm my experience it's not having the little bits that ma,e for a difficult swap..

Sorry for the delayed response.

On ebay he is selling stripped engines but if you call him he can quote whatever you need. He can also provide the little bits (i.e. relay/solenoid for fuel line, throttle cable, etc...) and ancillaries in a turnkey setup.

Please let us know how the conversion goes. I also have a 109 station wagon and was interested in your plans.

Thanks

Paul

Engine is finally shipping.

You can see it's a 200TDI with a 300TDI turbo and exhaust from Steve Parker.
I'll start a thread on the swap as soon as I get the engine.

So how is it going? How complete and useful was the kit from Martin/Landy LTD? Would you do it all again the same way if a pterodactyl came and flew away with your swapped landy?
