I bought my first Rover, a 1963 IIA 88, back in about 1990 and owned it until 2007. I've only owned my current SIII Lightweight for about 3 years.

Now, not a Rover, but I own a 1968 Camaro that I was brought home from the hospital in after being born. I've been the official owner for 27 years. When all is said and done, that car will have been part of my life from birth to death. I'm currently at 42 years and counting...hopefully at least another 42 to go!

Bought mine in October of last year....so about 10 months. 4000 miles so far with just about no issues.

The others....10+ years for the MGB; 15 years for the MGBGT; 3 years for the Imp. I have no intention of selling any of them, Rover included.

Unfortunately, that means that due to time, space, and money, there will be no more classics added to the fleet :(

The oldest receipt I can find is dated 04/13/1999. So at least 12 years and 2 months. Though it has aged me well beyond that.....

I bought my 51 year old Land Rover March of 1978 so I've owned her 33 years.

I bought my 50 year old Triumph in 1986 so I've owned her for 25 years

My first Rover purchase was back sometime in the late 80's either '87 or '88 if I remember correctly. It was my '65 109. Didn't get to drive her til 96.

The '69 p-up was purchased in '98 I think.

Had the '66 88 since 2005

My first Rover was purchased in 1970 and I owned it until 1976. My current Rover was purchased in 2006 and except for a few weak moments have no intention of parting with it any time soon.

I bought my 1960 Series II 88 in June of 1975. Did a complete mechanical restoration (and lots of upgrades) for its 50th birthday.

First British vehicle was a 74 MGB (last of the chrome bumpers), which I still regret selling. Bought the Rover about three years ago. After spending the first two years tinkering and putting on band-aids I'm now in the process of a full rebuild on a new frame and with a rebuilt 300tdi. In another three years or so I might even be able to drive her again!

Speaking of, anybody want to buy a butchered 109 frame and a worn out 2.25 diesel? ;)

First (2) Rovers were '86 S1s that my daughters drove (1 of) to high school. That was '93 to '99. Second one, a '72 S3 purchased trashed by PO in 2005, have had it ever since.

1960 Series II since May 2008
1997 Defender 90 since July 2010

At this time I own no other cars.
I don't plan on selling either until I can no longer drive them - and then I will pass them to my nephew. I am addicted.

Bought my first Brit car, a Morris 1000 2 door, in 1959. Bought the Disco in June of '94 and drove home from the dealer as OJ was making his slow run down the LA freeway. Bought the 69 2A in June of '99 and the series 1 in Dec. 01. Longest owned vehicle is 65 Volvo Canadian purchased new and now sitting in garage awaiting resto. Daily driver is 86 240 Volvo (owned since new) approaching 400,000 miles.

Purchased my first 1965 2a, ex MOD (RAF) in 1986. Drove two years before restoration. Purchased american market 69 (88inch) to suppliment rebuild of 1965. Same year purchased defender 90, drove defender 11 years, many fond memories on the power lines here in CT, although it never seemed to pass a gas station. Yes one rover is just not enough.

I bought a 2000 LR Discovery Series II brand new when I graduated from college, and got my first job. It was my first foray into the SUV market after owning pick-up trucks, and needing a family kid hauler. It was a great truck, but I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with it, as I lived over 1.5 hours from the only dealer in Maine, and no one would work on it in the area I live in, even after the warranty expired. I finally sold it in 2008, and replaced it with a Lexus GX470, which I have to admit is much more luxurious and reliable than the Disco ever was.

In 2009, I couldn't take not having a Land Rover anymore, and while I was looking for a Series rig for over 6 years, I finally found a classified ad for a 1966 series IIA station wagon model in Kittery Point, Maine. A deal was made, and I have spent the last 3 years now trying to get it to be a reliable toy to use for camping, enjoying, and treking with. Because the P.O. didn't know anything about general maintenance, I have found myself doing a slow rolling restoration, system by system as problems arise. It is a great project for my 9 year old son and I to play with on the weekends, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.:)

1971 2A bought in jan 1972, from first owner. first car I ever bought, still have her..over forty years...can identify probably any part inside or out.mostly because I've had to fix it at some time or another..but has never left me stranded, and still is my favorite...something about having a vehicle that you don't have to look to activate a switch, because you've done it a thousand times before. rove on bobzinak...

A little over 2 years, but I discovered it had a bad engine bearing job a few months into owning it so I didn't have it for most of the first year. Getting familiar with most of the bits now, been a great learning experience.

Got my first one a 73' 88" in 2001. did a restoration on that truck and sold it in late 2009. Second 74 88" in early 2009 which has been my daily driver. Bought my 71 109" exmod early this year.

wow. that is beyond cool. did it still smell brand new??!!!

i got my first in college 1963 IIA 88, and held on to it for a good 4 years. regret getting rid of it. got my second on September 10, 2001 and parked it in my driveway, a 1/4 mile from where 2 of the hijackers were staying (Boston). had that ever since though it's a complete teardown and kind of s-l-o-w. but nice to know everything is being done right, or so i hope .

I've only owned my rover for 12 months. Though it is now in pieces I hope to have it on the road again in the next 12-24 months.

I can claim longer ownership, but it is via family lineage. My father bought it in 1964, and it was a farm vehicle until he died and it was parked in 1979. From then until 2010 it sat unused and essentially abandoned. It came back to me only because the property had been sold to friends of the family. But since I learned to drive in this rover, it feels like it has always been mine.

Lately, I've been thinking that my father made a mistake in not getting the green bible and getting me started on it decades ago.

Posted once, but have attached again a photo from 1964 of me and my father and the rover- when we were all considerably younger.

IN the last year this insane, mechanical project has given me enormous pleasure.

I've owned one rover for 3 years and another for 2. I've driven both rovers a total of about 20 minutes :D Of course both are projects....one is ready for reassembly and the other really just needs a new home. Then there is the hybrid that I'd really like to finish....just need to get a defender bulkhead, windshield+frame, and roof.

I've had my poppy red '74 Series III since 1988. I bought it from a plumber in Rockland County NY. I had some work done on it in 1989 by Fred Monsees ("Piermont Off-Road"), who at the time had a shop on Cape Cod. Anybody know where he is now?

I hardly ever get to drive it, but I'll never sell this thing.

I first started looking for a Series Land Rover in 1993. My Dad and I went and drove an '88, I couldn't get it into second gear and he just laughed and laughed (and laughed) at me.

I bought my '67 IIa 109 Station Wagon in the later months of 1999 and the love affair has lost none of the passion. I've just added a wife, a dog and two kids to the affair (in that order).

My first one stayed around for 8 years, but it was young and almost never broke. Most just visit for a year or two, but I think I'll keep the present ('73 88) for a few seasons. I've had my NAS110 for 11 years.

I fell in love with Rovers when I was working in southern africa in the early 80s. A new disco was purchased in '98 and a new range rover in 2006 (both sold). I reenergized my love affair with "real" rovers (at least to me) when I was back in Africa in the bush in 2007 and bought my '95 d-90 when I returned. The series came in when an uncle by marriage who had owned it since new was moving into assisted living and it had to go to a good home last year. Who knows what is next...

Charles,
Are you referring to Fred Monsees of Camel Trophy fame? He rode in my Defender with the GF at the last Overland Expo on the LRExperience course. I think he is an instructor with the Land Rover Experience - full time? Very cool guy if we are referring to the same Fred.

i think sometimes people forget how important history is. it sounds odd but people do often bond with other people through objects. then those objects become heirlooms. just recently my father sold the mercedes he bought just months after i was born back in '77. felt kind of strange to see it go.

and to answer the OPs question, i bought my first in 2005, a RHD '79 SIII 109 safari wagon. and my second just last year in august. a '66 RHD SIIa 88 soft top. so clearly not long enough...

i guess the trend dictates that i'm due for a third purchase sometime in 2015.

Photo was taken in Lancing, Tennessee, which is on the cumberland Plateau. About an hr northwest of Knoxville. The truck was purchased in England, driven a relatively short distance in the UK and shipped to Boston in aprox April 1964 (the ship, the American Chieftain was new at the time and scrapped in 1988). IIRC my father told the story that it arrived 'uncrated', which as he told it meant it was on the ship's deck but not fully assembled. He spent the weekend putting things together at my uncle's house outside Boston.

I am hoping that my aunt, as she packs up her house to go to live with her kids, goes through photos. I cannot imagine that the weekend assembly project was not photographed at all.

You never know. But the history is interesting.

I published this information some time ago in the NADA Forum. I purchased Clarence new in 1968 from a Dealer in or around Silver Springs, MD. The Engine Blew in 1975 and until 2005 Clarence sat under a tree while a jungle grew in and around him He is undergoing a complete restoration from the ground up. We are awaiting the fabrication of a new NADA Bulkhead by Paul Halley at Pegasus. If I live long enough I'll publish the photo story of the "Resurrection of Clarence".
