Can anyone tell me what this hole is for?
Someone may have added it to run a plug for a block heater.

Was the vehicle towed on its own without a trailer and that was a socket for operating its lights when being towed?
Engine shut-off switch?
Other random accessory as others have mentioned . . .

I had planned to put the supercharger on the other side.
I wondered if it was for a Land Rover option offered in 1960. It isn't apparent that the car ever had a winch.
I believe it is where a rod comes out that is part of an optional part which allows you to operate a winch from inside the vehicle.

It could be all of the above or it could be the fresh air intake for the heater. They can be on the side of the finder/wing, but I have seem them located right where yours is. I have (somewhere) the part that bolts to it from the inside to connect the hose to.

Is there any evidence of a snow plough being fitted?
Could be the mount for the reciever for the hydraulic coupling ?

Thanks, all, for the information about my breakfast hole. I know very little of my SII's history. The body panels are very battered, but not with the signiture marks of off-road adventures. Much of the car had only 13,000 miles on it when I acquired it..original chassis in good shape, so it must have lived inside most of its life. The drive train is newer. I has been completely rewired in a very un-Rover-like fashion. I regard that as good news....everything works.

It looks like it could of been a battery shut off switch mount. Mine has one that the po installed because he had a slight drain on the battery.

It's where you stick your finger , when it leaks, you know like the dutchman in a dike.
Tsmith, you are lucky... that hole is NLA and you could probably sell it for big bucks!
