Soooo - I've got this 109 NADA I'm getting back into running/stopping condition.
It's been off the road for at least a decade.

Here's what's mounted on the home-shop fabricated front bumper.

Belleview Model 6000. Looks like a beast - bonus is that it looks like it was manufactured in Portland, Oregon!

Any insights into what I should do with it? Rehab, rebuild, etc.?

Thanks, gents.

i have next to zero experience with winches, but i'd say replace that steel cable, maybe test and rebuild the motor and refurb the housing.

done and done.

Basically I'm repeating what RoverForm said minus replace the cable, it doesn't look that bad, get some cable grease and grease the cable up (it should be lubricated), but definitely take the motor off have it rebuilt (even if it currently works) refurbish the housing and keep it.

wouldnt waste my time with that cable. it probably not the safest in that condition. if your gonna try and refurbish the winch go with a plasma rope . that rusty line doesnt look safe.

Those are fabulous winches. Precursor to the Warn 8274. I'd do some web surfing to see if you can get parts for it, which I think you can. Any good armature shop will either rebuild or source you a new motor. In my area we have a place called Pasco (http://www.pascoelectric.com/), which I use for anything electric motor related.
Obviously it needs a rebuild which will not involve replacing the insulators with BET*. Get some real honest to goodness boat cable, adhesive lined heat shrink, stud covers, and terminal lugs from my man at Genuinedealz.com.
The synth cable you want to use is Amsteel 3/8"

All excellent replies - thanks for the rebuild recommendation. I believe I will!
There's a few electric motor shops around. I'll do some digging!

A 6000lb winch is a little light for a 109 if you are actually stuck. Just a thought before you put too much money into it.

Do you have the controller on the inside of the cab for it? If so that's great. It would have 3 knobs attached to cables. (pic in first link below.)

It's a Warn/Bellview. There's plenty of info out there. Warn can't get you any more parts for it but if you contact them they will give you one guy's name from one shop somewhere that still has parts for these things. I will see if I can find that info for you. The newer models of these are rated at 8000 lbs and not much changed so these winches are probably (that's an assumption, so take at your own risk!) good for 8000 or so pounds. Draw back on these winches is when you stop pulling, the cable free-spoils out. There is no power out. There is a band brake mechanism on the side of the unit that you must apply in order to keep from un-spoiling the cable. This can be dangerous, I suppose.
Here are a few links I have found interesting/helpful:

Well, anyway, all those come straight from a google search. Btw, I have one of these things that I would like to put back in service someday and need a few parts. If you happen to change your mind and choose not to mess with this thing I may be interested in it.

Take care and good luck.
