Hello all,

So I've gone a little farther into things than planned (what's new?!).

I am having my heater core box powdercoated along with a lot of other stuff, and so have the core removed.

Last winter, it seemed like the heater output was decent, but as I have the core out, I've got two options:

-Just flush it out
-Spend $25 at Napa on this (per other threads I've read):
https://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Result.aspx?Ntt=660-3076&Ntk=Keyword&Nty=1&Dn=0&D=660-3076&Dk=1&Dp=3&N=0

Question is I have nothing to compare my core output to. Is this Napa one going to give me more heat output than my original core (even if in good shape?). It's out....so now's the time to make a decision!

Regards,
Julian

If you have the core out what is $25? It will gain you some piece of mind that your old one won't start to leak and you will get the best heat output you can expect. I'm having mine replaced when the bulkhead is replaced just because it is one less thing to wonder about and there is no better time to do it.

No question.... it was not really the $25, but just wanting to be assured from someone that has done this conversion that I can expect at least the same amount of heat from this aftermarket core as the one I am removing. Again, mine put out decent heat.....needs to be at least as good. Will keep the old one in case I'm not pleased with the results.

By the way, good point about leaking on the old core....never thought about that :D

Couple of other things related:

--The square foam seals from the heater dist box to the bulkhead and bulkhead to the S3 dash.....does anyone supply them?

--Can anyone send me pics of the routing of the inlet and outlet pipes from the core to the heater control valve. My valve was removed, but I found one that looks almost new in my parts stash. I think I am missing some metal piping that should be there, but heater hose with the metal things that control the bends might work!

Thanks!
Julian

Along with the core, take a good look at your fan motor and output. This will affect how much heat you get as much as the core, of not more.

Salemrover had a bus heater in is first SII. That thing was rediculous!

Does anyone know of direct replacements for the drum fan used in the stock SIII heater? I want something with more oomph. I saw one of the Land Rover videos by Riverport Rovers and he put a GM fan in his to up the output. I think he had to do some cutting though, and I'd rather avoid that if possible.

Mad Max and the Arse-less chap man from Thunderdome wouldn't have a problem cutting into things.

That looks a bit like my heater core replacement project, outlined on the old G&R archive site here (http://gunsandrovers.yuku.com/topic/4902/I-can-tell-winter-is-coming-because).

Julian,

Have you gotten a picture of the routing of the metal heater pipes yet? I refurbished and re-installed my heater last winter. I was able to find the original metal pipes and can get you a picture of how they are routed to the heater control valve and to the block return. I do not know if I still have your e-mail address. Send me a pm with your e-mail address and I will get you a picutre if you still need it
