Anyone building rock sliders for a 88? I know rovers north offers a set, I know Ike built them in the past, but is to busy to build any now. Any fab guys on here building them? Like a gentleman said in a older post, i don't want to reinvent the wheel. I could build them, but i am having a hard time getting enough time to build them. Just wanting some options for these for the sliders. Anyway any help would be appreciated.

I got some from Pangolin4x4 ( www.pangolin4x4.com ) for my 88... they are seriously beefy...

I too looked into Ike for the sliders . I bought my front winch bumper from him. It too forever, and ever.... BUT the design was well done and the cost was ok . Nice build, I looked at every weld. I don't need poor attachments to let go on a 8 hour pull out of the hell hole at winter romp.
If you can wait .... buy from pangolin/Ike.
If you need sooner , buy from our hosts.
I have the roversnorth sliders and the are beefy and work well. Easy install ....when the install info is sent.....a quick pdf and they were on in 1 hour...
also well made but not as rounded at the ends. Your choice, time or money....

Yeah, I like Ike's the best with the rounded ends. I have been asking him about them off and on for about 6 months. I guess I am going to have to make some, unless any guys on here are building any.

I just make my own. That way if it's late I've got no one to yell at but myself. And if a weld breaks.....same thing....And....you can't beat the price!:thumb-up:

mrdoiron posted a picture of his sliders in response to your question.

Also, sliders stick out from the body side a bit so that rocks and stumps do not go into the door.

Excellent post by crankin!!

Wow, my truck was more blue with many fewer dents back then.....

I love my sliders. Visually they replace the 'sills' under the door. Structurally they're way different. Mine do stand proud of the bodywork by about a half inch, which is a good thing.

Very handy, useful and protective :thumb-up:

yeah I really want a set like those for my 109, apart from the off road protection the added structure would certainly help in a t-bone accident from the side, which would be nice since the "crumple zone" is basically the entire truck.

Not sure what exactly you mean by details, the Host sells them fyi. Install can take different directions...but since I'm in Texas and don't use the heater, this one is fed through the heater intake grill area to avoid cutting, but you'd likely not do the same... and then get a raised air intake kit to connect to the air cleaner (pic encl),

Keep the pics coming. I talked to Ike today, he does not have any sliders built and is to busy to build any with all the rover parts he has coming in. I understand about being to busy.

No its not the RN one. But essentially they are all very similar...just commenting that they have one avail...

Not sure I follow, how so ? One difference is that most are installed with the upright following the windshield line, whereas this has a bracket to position it vertical @ 90 to the hood. Otherwise pretty std fare

yes. but yours definitely looks different.

If you use an earlier style oil bath (like this one: http://bringatrailer.com/2010/08/30/war-department-issue-1949-land-rover/), one without holes in the top, you can route the intake hose from the snorkel directly to said oil bath and have a hose from the bath run to the carb.

My sliders were made by ECR about 10 years ago. They were moved onto a new frame by Matt @ Overland Engineering a some years later.. Love 'em.

Andrew:

I am in the same boat...I would like some sliders and don't have a lot of time to make a set of sliders for my rover restoration project. In case it helps I saw this site (below) where the fabrication of sills is explained. I figured down the road I would combine this design with some of Ike's sill features (I also found out Ike is fully booked right now).

There is a company in UK "Mill Services" (second link below) that fabricates some nice looking sliders (multiple designs) at a fair price. I have exchanged E-Mails with them but they usually just ship to locations in UK & I have not figured out how to arrange transport from their location. Maybe one of the gang on the board is planning a trip to UK and pick us both up a set?

It might be worth while to see about a group buy... but I don't think our host would like for us to do that. This is one of those camp fire talks.

One thing to note if you are building your own.... Some folks (like the links above) cut out a section of the slider to get it to fit around the bulkhead outrigger better and fit more flush to the body. I did not and let mine sit proud of the side of the body. It gives about 1/2 to 1 inch of extra side protection and is a WHOLE LOT SIMPLER to build.

I understand that some folks want to smooth side lines - so it is a personal choice.

If you really want someone to make a set that are completely to your liking, contact Carey at www.downeastcoachworks.com (http://www.downeastcoachworks.com) He is making a set for me now, as we speak. Galvanized, and beefy, just like Ike's

I must be missing somthimg....I ordered mine from RN and did a little custom cutting to fit on my 88.

Arrington

Well I have started building a set.

The thing I feel with RN set for me is there plain and costly for what they are. I want something different than everyone else. I am sure there good and strong for the RN sliders. I just want something a little different.

Do you have pics of what you did to them?

I haven't got the sliders on yet, they are waiting to be galvanized. He is also finishing up a front bumper for my Warn 8274, and a surprise goodie that I can't tell you about yet. :p Cost wise, you are best off to talk with Carey directly. He is on the board here somewhere, but I would just call or e-mail him off the website I listed. Prices will vary if you are looking for specific custom features. They are built to order, so anything you can imagine is possible. Ike's sliders were awesome, but since he is no longer building them, Carey hopes to fill the void while not reinventing the wheel.

My rock sliders were made out of 2x4 box steel and 2x2 box steel. the 2x4 is the actual rock slider while 2 pieces of 2x2 were used to attach it to the frame.

Super simple, looks pretty good, cheap.

I recently built a pair of sliders for my 88. I didn't cut the slider to accomodate the bulkhead outrigger as I wanted them to sit out for side protection.

Here's a photo of the ones I made for my 88". I used 1" x 4" U-channel 1/4" thick. I wanted mine flush with the body so that they looked factory. However, they would easily support the full weight of the vehicle and could be spaced out with washers if you wanted them to stick out from the body.

The 2nd photo shows the welded on brackets that allowed them to be bolted and unbolted.
