So theoretically speaking, if I was going to get my steel wheels refinished and needed to lift and support the 88 on jack stands, what are the best points of lift and support while all four wheels are off?

There isn't enough axle space between the diff and spring on the right side to support under axle, so I was thinking of jack standing under the spring hangar plate...

I always do it on the spring hanger plate when doing wheels and/or brakes.

anyone ever leave an 88 on four 3 ton jacks stands for about a week?

3 ton jack under the spring hanger plates should be fine. Sometimes I double up with a 2nd just behind it under the axel. The only problem I've had for long times is the jack base digging into the asphalt.

that's basically the set up i've got, one 3 ton jack stand under each of the four spring hangar plates. all the wheels are off. it's in the garage on concrete so sinking shouldn't be an issue.

but has anyone ever had a jack stand fail?

i just hope there isn't an earthquake in the next few days, otherwise i'm screwed.

I usually place my jack stands between the springhanger plate and the brakedrum underneath the axel, there is just enough space to place the 3.000 kg jack stands that I have, and it's very sturdy. Mine stood on the jack stands for about 3 month, when I was renovating.

I suppose anything can fail but I've never had it happen. I wouldn't worry too much.

I had a set of cheap jack stands deform on me once, but they didn't fail. I picked them up to repair a trailer that was pretty light weight. Anyways, they were stamped thin steel. I have a much nicer set of cast iron ones I use for vehicles. If you have good jack stands, you will be fine. that is what they are made for.

^^ I do the same thing with the block of wood when using my floor jack. My spring center bolts stick down a little, so I drilled a hole in the middle of them.

I have a set of jack stands, but rarely use them. Back in the late 80's my parents built a post & beam house in Maine. I saved quite a few pieces of the beams when they were cut to length, and I've been using them in place of jack stands ever since.

Mentioned above is the callout of between the spring hanger and the brake drum. I do the same and the axle sits in the pocket on the jack stand which to me feels more secure than your set up. Probably fine what you are doing but to me having the axle securely in the v of the jack stand feels very stable.

brilliant idea. i thought about using some railroad ties, but i'd have to drive down to the brick yard and buy a few, and at this point all the tires are off the rims of the 88 so i'd have to rent a truck for pick-up etc... you see where this is going.

also, would enjoy seeing some pics of the post and beam house.

agreed art. i would prefer to have the axle settled in the "v" of the saddle, but on my 88, there doesn't seem to be enough width between the spring hanger u-bolt and the bolt plate where the swivel ball attaches to the axle. the saddle of the stand post appears to be too wide to fit there.

and on the other side of the spring, the diff curves right up into the spring.

that's a good looking 109. how'd it turn out? is that a bend in the RR rim?
