Thinking about picking one of these up - not thinking I should pass up the opportunity to possibly drop this in the 109. Info plate is clean and detailed (rebuilt/preserved/etc with dates) What would you guys say it's worth on the open market?

Well, if you're going to all the trouble of putting in another engine why not a 200 Tdi? Its just about a straight drop in and you'll go all gushy with the power.

Ideally, I'd like a 200tdi. They're seemingly troublesome to source here in SoCal, though.

Is it a stored rebuilt engine, or is it a since-used engine that was stored/preserved at some point?

If it was remanufactured and preserved, I'd probably pay in the $2500-3000 neighborhood if it had all ancillaries. In my mind, it would be competing with used 200Tdi's in this preice range. New 2.5NA or used (up?) 200Tdi??

If it's a used take-out, depending on a lot of things, I'd pay $1000-$1500 and wouldn't wonder if I should have tripled my investment and bought a used 200/300 Tdi.

It's been remanufactured/preserved - with all ancillaries.
Just sitting on a pallet waiting to be put to good use!

Hi,

I have a 2.25 diesel in my 88 a friend has the 2.5 in his 88. He has marginally more power than I and slightly higher fuel useage on the same trip. Both ours are normally aspirated.
A 2.25 petrol will have more power. Especially on uphills. Both our loaded 88's struggle in the mountains at altitude on uphills. 35 in 3rd maxxed out, smoking like the Marlboro man!
The difference between a NA and electrically injected diesel is by pushing on the go pedal the NA fuel pump is allowed to turn faster. It puts in the same amount of fuel wether at idle or full out. An electrically injected system operates by varing the timing and length of time the injector is open to allow more fuel flow at the proper time.
All Rover diesels can run forever with proper care(it would seem). They can save you $ at the pump with better milage 22mpg vs 17mpg for petrol.
The 2.5 NA is probably worth $1000-2500 here in the States. You will need to add a fuel filter and fuel return to tank line, engine stop cable, glow plug stuff--depending on how you go(series,parallel)/what you have, switch, resistor.
200tdi would be better but like you say hard to find in Ca.
