View Full Version : Swivel ball pictures?

I'll be replacing a swivel ball on my SIII this weekend. The new one arrived today and as I looked at it, I noticed a recess at the flange side. Looks like a bearing goes in there, says I. Yes, Internet says one goes there too. Even my books show a bearing in the bearing-shaped hole in the flange side of a swivel ball.

The rub is, having done the other side, I have no recollection of a bearing there despite doing it just two months ago. My receipts don't show me buying one either.

Can someone post a picture or two of a swivel ball freshly removed? Where is this bearing most likely to stay upon disassembly? I had the axle out and axle housing stripped, so either the bearing stayed on the axle or the axle housing or the swivel ball had the bearing already in place.

PS: I'm talking about parts 5-7 here: http://www.roversnorth.com/store/c-68-swivel-ball.aspx (http://www.roversnorth.com/forums/../store/c-68-swivel-ball.aspx)

Thanks

Apis,
I have 4 swivel balls on the bench. In each case the bearing stayed in the ball. I can make some pictures if you want.

That's what I thought (and was afraid of) and why I wanted pictures.

If that's the case then I need to order that bearing and since I forgot to order the swivel bearing too, no swivel swap for me this weekend.

Many Thanks

That bearing supports the outer end of the inner shaft. It will come with the inner race which needs to be pressed on to the shaft. In my experience they are a matched set and need to be installed together, i.e. you can't get away with changing the bearing and not the inner race. I've tried it and had one that didn't fit and one that ended up too loose.
