Anyone know the torque specs for the large bolts that hold the series bellhousing to the tranny? Had to swap out the 6cyl bellhousing for a 4cyl one and need to re assemble everything.

Tight. ;)
Land Rover didn't provide torque specs for them.
I'd measure them and torque accordingly.

Thanks. I won't waste any more time looking. Good and tight will do.

Just use the standard torque specified for that size/thread pitch bolt:

EDIT: Sorry it's probably Whitworth if it's on the transmission, right? Here's that chart:

Never even though about that. Good idea! Thanks.

Mark,
Yeah, that's what I meant by "torque appropriately."

That's what I figured, but I don't think it caught on with everyone... :)

Those torque numbers are for the bolts. If the bolts are going into aluminum alloy castings, then the castings strip before the bolts do. Just go with goodandtight.

That's a good point....

I'm a bit slow until hit between the eyes with a 2x4.

Good reminder about the steel bolts vs aluminium transmission case. 3 are bolts and nuts, the 4th is threaded into the aluminium case.

There's a chart somewhere on the net with torque figures for steel in to threaded aluminum.

I just changed a rear seal and clutch. Good and tight is the way to go. I used the bible torque spec and turned the heads off the bolts. Thankfully when I removed the bell housing there was enough left on the bolt shaft to take it out with vice grips.

Sounds like you had weakened bolts or there was a SPOT of using grade 2 bolts at some point.
