View Full Version : Length of pie plate spare tire bolt?

All,

One more question I should have asked in my previous thread:

The pie plate that holds my spare had the part for the padlock for the spare and the "cam" that goes on the other side. The bolt, that screws through the cam into the threaded hole on the pie plate, was missing.

I have determined it is 1/2-20 thread. Any clue on the length of the bolt needed?

Regards,
Julian

Julian,

I'll measure mine tonight if no one responds sooner.

The ones on my desk measure 2 3/4" from under the head to the tip of the bolt.

I know there are at least two different length bolts and matching cams, depending on the rim width and offset.

these are not just regular bolts. the hex head is larger than a standard bolt, it matches the lug nut size.
I also thought the threads were a locking type also so they don't loose up.

I think its called a Heavy Hex Bolt. I see 1/2-13, but not 1/2-20.

1/2-13 in coarse thread and 1/4 - 20 is fine thread. Still the head is not standard for either. It's lug nut size so the spare can be removed with th lug wrench

IIRC it's a 1/2" BSF thread. And as stated above, it has a 1 1/16" head to match the lug wrench.

I thought I'd need to get a longer hold down bolt when I switched my bonnet spare from 900 x 16 to a 235 85R 16, but the existing hold down bolt with the 1 1/16" hex head is plenty long enough. (Deluxe bonnet with a 109-offset rim)

Probably a good thing, since this bolt seems to be a bit exotic...

Mark,

Were you running 900x16's or only a large spare?

Oops--I was confused. I meant to say 7.50 x 16. The 900 x 16's were on my brain from an old military truck I used to own.

All,

Thanks for the info. I am running the regular 15" rims. As for coarse vs fine vs BSF, the old owner must have tapped the plate for 1/2-20 (as I recall when I tested bolts in there).

Did not think about the size of the head. RN PM'd me and told me they sell the right bolt. If it ends up the right thread that mine is, maybe I should order it from them (will have to verify with RN.....I'd hate to spend $20 on a bolt if it does not fit the thread in the hole!!).

Back to the rear door.....day off today so it might be on there at the end!

I checked one of my bolts. It appears that it is a 1/2 BSF thread.
If you would like to borrow one to check for fit let me know.
