Hello everybody,

I just started my "Dandan" restoration:thumb-up:; I am not sure exactly the model of this series, It is told 1964 military edition. I need a help on where chassis number can be obtain. Here below I would share the pic of Dandan :D

The engine looks to replace better than waste time/effort in rebuild; therefore, what other series petrol 4cylinder engine can work in straight forward replacement? I am thinking in 2.5L SIII engine?

Also do you recommend to replace gearbox at same time since engine replacement option is there?

Order a new engine from Turner (http://turner-engineering.co.uk/) in the UK. Also order a rebuilt S3 gearbox and transfer case from Ashcroft Transmissions (http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/). Order a new frame from Designa Chassis (http://www.designa-chassis.co.uk/), Marsland Chassis (http://www.marslands.com/).
Remove the aluminum skins from the frames on the doors bonnet and tailgate. There are lots of rivets that you will have to chisel the heads off of. Strip all removable parts from the fire wall. Take the separated aluminum and steel parts to be chemically stripped of rust and paint.
Overhaul the steering gear, axles and clean out the fuel tank and radiator (there should be a shop that can do that for you)
Order a new wiring harness (http://www.autosparks.co.uk/index.php?cPath=63&oscsid=4c0i500ep1nt0o7jsfojs96r35), starter and battery, and clean up all the lamp fixtures.
Take clean steel parts to have galvanized, and send body panels to paint shop.
Order new polybush kit and parabolic springs from Heystee automotive (http://www.heystee-automotive.com/parts/springs/parabool.htm)
Order new seats, interior and canvas hood from Exmoor trim (http://www.exmoortrim.co.uk/).

Other replacement parts can be had from John Craddock (http://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/) or Famous Four (http://www.famousfour.co.uk/) or any number of suppliers.

Should be somewhere in the $15-25,000 range for all that, but the truck will be good for another 40 or so years.

Reassemble and enjoy.

Wow, great full rebuild plan:)

I am not planning to have core parts abroad, I aim to use available part in our country (plenty of LR series part available) with little modification such as milling cylinder head/using SIII cam...etc

No problem. Actually didnt attach the photos. If you have the web address directly to the photo you can link them so they appear in the message. All I did was get that link from Flikr and then when I posted here I pasted that link into the box that shows up after clicking the little yellow icon on the menu bar.....looks like a rectangle with a small mountain and sun in it and a yellow background....6th from right.

Hmm, well good luck with that. However, buying the parts directly from the sources mentioned above will not be all that much more money than having things done locally from parts "available in your country", and you can be assured that they will be done right and are ready to drop in.

If you get into this truck, you are not going to get away cheap, unless you just want a quaint beater.

Whats wrong with a quaint beater? A lot of Land Rovers have served out their lives in that roll.

So.....tell us the "story". Tales of it's lurid past (whether true or not) and how you came upon the Rover.

We all need a story to read on Xmas eve so we can have something to look forward to other than experiencing shopping psychosis.

Story just started and will end after 6 month hopefully :D

Can any tell where chassis number is stamped?

Happy Xmas

I believe the chassis number is on the front spring hanger.

There is a lot of good information, including chassis, engine and gearbox numbers, at www.lrfaq.org. www.expeditionlandrover.info also has a lot of good info.

Best of luck!

6 months? That's a quick turnaround for a complete restoration.

The chassis number is on the outside of the right hand front spring hanger.

Being a military model, you may want to join the EMLRA at www.emlra.org . Also, I understand that you want to purchase parts locally, but there are some very good places to source parts. For ex-military vehicles, PA Blanchard can be a very good source for hard to find parts. www.lrseries.com is also a good source for many parts. I restored ax ex-military SIII Air Portable and used both of these sources.

A 6-month turnaround will be impressive...... at least to me.

If you are just replacing everything with new parts, then you might be able to do it in 6 months. If you are actually going to restore the parts of your vehicle and re-use them, then you are probably looking at 12-18 months (Assuming you are actually doing the work and not paying someone else to do your sandblasting, stripping, rebuilding & painting. Also assuming you have a job and are not working all day every day on your Rover.). It took me 18 months of 'spare time' to do my Air Portable and I have an estimated 1000 hours labor into it.

Check it out if interested:

What are the labor rates like in Dubai? I bet you could easily do it in 6 months if you farmed some of it out as you go, there is no reason you have to do every single operation yourself.. Also don't be afraid to look for parts locally, there are(used to be?) some great boneyards over there that were full of good trucks for parts. Someone posted pics a while back of one and it was amazing what was hidden out there in the older yards.

Thanks :) following info I got for my "Dandan":

Model: Land Rover, Series IIA

حراج or تشليح

ARAMCO had vast boneyards filled with old Land Rovers, Dodge Power Wagons etc. A lot of stuff got abandoned/ stored but never scrapped- for years...

See if you can find them- if they still exist they are a gold mine of parts, I don't know exactly where they were, if they were in Dubai or Saudi Arabia or where there.

http://www.lrfaq.org/Series/FAQ.S.Chassis.tracing.html the info there might help you find out more on your 88"

Hi all,

Here to share the progress of my project rebuild; the work last few weeks was one remove all parts on the truck and restore the chassis therefore it will good foundation to start with as all is doing, here below is three photo of progress on chassis:

Chassis before: http://flic.kr/p/bb5XVx
Chassis during: http://flic.kr/p/bmpDsn
Chassis after: http://flic.kr/p/brMpVz

In the same time body works started and waiting for primer and paint work, there was some wholes discovered while removing the paint, where I believed it used for antenna:

Carrier striped off: http://flic.kr/p/bmpGng
Right wing where bridge plate mark still there:thumb-up: :http://flic.kr/p/bmpEHg
Left wing & antenna whole after it is weld: http://flic.kr/p/bmpFEr
Firewall before: http://flic.kr/p/bb63jH
Firewall during: http://flic.kr/p/bmv1m6
Firewall progress is going on

I know some are asking about the engine:D so...the original engine found totally costly replacing it's parts such as crank and camshaft; therefore, my uncle offered me another engine, when I checked it I found it belong to S3 8:1

Old engine: http://flic.kr/p/aZetRM
New engine:pz: http://flic.kr/p/bpwSH4 (you can imagine enviroment where I am living;))

The engine in progress for rebuild, it's found piston head require replacement and today in milling shop to check if milling is require.

You may see another image on my flicker account. I tried to attach the picture but it doesn't works:(

Regards,
Ahmad

Great job on the restoration. Love the color, and the shot on the beach with the kayaks.
