hello folks :)

had a little nose round the forum the other night so thought i'd call in and be sociable

ok a little about me/my landrovers

i'm 54 this year and decided to buy myself a wreck of a landrover three years ago (impulse purchase), i bought what was advertised as a Series 2a 88" which turned out to be a S3 in reality (i knew nothing of landrovers), rotten as a pear but i can weld so i quickly patched it up and got it road legal, drove it for a few weeks with a tired 2.25 diesel and decided i needed to have it travel a little quicker

so i bought a disco' for the engine and a few more bits and did the conversion (200tdi and 3.54 diffs) completely transformed the ability to go from A to B, derusted and oiled the springs for a bit more comfort and was reasonably happy

i then realised 7.50x16 tyres would give another little improvement over the 205x16s, now it's starting to motor :thumb-up:

i then went out and got myself a Fairey overdrive, this now really makes a difference, i can either have 55-65mph economical driving (35+mpg) or i can really press on with 85mph reached with ease (just a truck cab no tilt)

now i'm really enjoying learning about the Series motor and the simplicity of it along with the driving so i scrapped my boring economical eurobox and was talked into buying parabolics (they were secondhand and cheap) so it got those as well

as i bought it (meet Zebedee)

and as it is now (a little bad language in the video)
http://s259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/NiteMare_08/Heart%20of%20England%20offroad%20tracks/?action=view&current=2236854675248_37757.mp4

i've sank it, dropped it in silt up to the chassis, dragged 2.5ton 50 odd miles with it, in general it's my all around fun drive/hooligan tool and daily workhorse and in three years hasn't let me down too badly or too unexpectedly, only twice it hasn't got me home

well i said "landrovers" in the first couple of lines, so here is my second
http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/NiteMare_08/My%201965%20109/Picture004.jpg

this one is a 1965 109 2.25 petrol utility, bought it non running and knowing there was going to be welding and a full stripdown ahead along with a couple of modifications (bought with spare bulkhead)

so i dragged it home and parked it in my front garden for about a year whilst i collected stuff/parts
eventually i'd got enough bits to start and it was time to repair the bulkhead (correct start point in my opinion)

that repaired and painted and it was then time to get Big Ears out the back into my workspace/yard and get stuck in

rebuild both dumbirons and the crossmember

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/NiteMare_08/My%201965%20109/randomBigEarsrebuildpictures011-1.jpg

replace two drivers side outriggers (that means the right hand side here ;) )

pull the engine gearbox and bulkhead out and clean up the chassis back to the tub and replace the blown front springs
http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/NiteMare_08/My%201965%20109/randomBigEarsrebuildpictures030.jpg

well we've finished the front half of the chassis and it's time to install the engine and 'box (slight upgrade)
http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/NiteMare_08/My%201965%20109/randomBigEarsrebuildpictures031.jpg

yes that's a 200tdi with 300tdi turbo :D

refit the bulkhead and doors, spend ages getting them lined up correctly and now the doors close with a nice click
http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/NiteMare_08/My%201965%20109/randomBigEarsrebuildpictures-1.jpg

clean and paint all the bits i removed from the bulkhead and then refit

next was to experiment on fitting the radiator and intercooler (200tdi rad' , TD5 intercooler)
http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/NiteMare_08/My%201965%20109/randomBigEarsrebuildpictures013-1.jpg

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/NiteMare_08/My%201965%20109/randomBigEarsrebuildpictures008-2.jpg

my next modification was to build my own wiring harness with a couple extra fuses and relays for lighting and fan

they still both require continual fettling/work/tinkering but.....

meet Chalkie :D
http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/NiteMare_08/Chalkie%20my%2088inch%202a/trailer004.jpg

he's my next project, a 1970/71 New Zealand ex military 88" "skippy", a few unusual bits to him, not least the chassis which has factory extended dumbirons/spring hangers and shackles similar to the 1ton chassis

anyway you now know almost as much as i do about my landrovers and a tiny little bit about my loose screw :D

Hi All :thumb-up:

p.s.
had to lose a couple of photos due to the limitations of this forum but i guess you get the idea

p.p.s.
i'm at present tearing down a 59 88" ragtop for a friend, full freshen up and 200tdi modifications, all with my own personal touches :)

Hey Nitemare,
I think that's the most pics I've seen of Big Ears finished. Oh, BTW welcome to my side of the pond :thumb-up: Nice to have you here, they're a good bunch on this forum, just like on the S2A forum. They're just as knowledgeable and friendly as Wittsend, Roger and the rest back at S2A.
Talk to you later.
