View Full Version : Need 16" wheels

Just had all four of my wheels condemned by the local tire/wheel shop - too bent to fix. Does anyone have any suggestions for where to source some original (or just like - see my previous post "stickler for originality") 16" wheels? It's a '59 SII...

Also, was getting to cleaning up and painting my oil sump and discovered a pretty good cave-in of the bottom (consistent with a few other things I found along the way - I think the PO dropped the truck at one time). It's probably usable, but I'd like to find one that looks better. Any suggestions?

Joel, is this a LWB or SWB? I might have someone who can source you some, he's part way between the two of us, and he sells used rims pretty cheap.

Joel:

I switched to 16's about four years ago, and went with new rims for purposes of durability and longevity: Our shared environment is quite harsh, and unless you find a nice used set and sand blast / powder coat them you may see rust bubbling through fairly quickly.

I don't know if there are specific offset requirements for your truck, but I, too, am a '59 (not my truck, but me) and appreciate your concern for originality.

It's an 88". Any help appreciated!

Ted, '59 was a good year, but I hope you're faring better than my friend in the garage did... I'm probably going to have them powder coated by ColorTech. They do a nice job, at least they did when Mike owned them and I did my BMW m'cycle.

I think you're going to have trouble finding new 16" wheels that are the correct old narrow type. I looked all over for some (since the Lightweight originally used the narrow 16" wheels) and couldn't find anything. If you find any new ones and they have more than you need, please let me know.

I was having the same issue and found a supply of 15 inch that work well and are dirt cheap. we did have 15 as oem on rovers in the usa .

Joel:

what size tire are you thinking of running?

I use 235/85/16s, which I have been told are very close to (but also somewhat wider than) the stock bias ply 16's that came on our trucks.

I suspect that the diameter is close but I think my tires are significantly wider - but not unreasonably so.

Having said all this, if you go with a tire of this (or similar size) you can use a Dunlop type rim available from our hosts (or others, I suppose).

You are welcome to come by sometime and see them up close.

The PO dropped the truck?!? Do tell. How hard do you have to drop it to damage an oil pan?

Are you sure they were balanced properly? ie on the stud holes and not the center hole?

Dropped it or jumped it? It wouldn't be the first time someone has played Dukes of Hazzard in a LR. :D

The early 16" rims bent pretty easily too.

I don't really think he dropped the truck, I was just commenting on the fact that everthing even close to the ground is somehow bent: wheels (didn't need to put them on a balancer - you could see the bending and twisting with the ***** eye), frame (bent, needed to be replaced), oil pan. I think it just had a hard ranch life.

Ted, I was going to use that size tire, but I want to try to find original rims. I'll use the aftermarked ones if I strike out.

Joel:

Good luck with your search. In the event that you do not find a satisfactory set of original rims, I think that you will be pleased with the appearance of the aftermarket wheels.

The aftermarket Dunlop rims are very nice. I ran a set on my 109 for 10 years. Unless you're after originality I can see the value in searching-out the LR versions.

That said, I have a set of (4) 5.5" LR wheels, and (1) 5" LR wheel all shod with Michelin XCL's that will be surplus to my needs in about a months time...

I have a 1969 109 and need one 16" wheel as a spare. Maybe together some of us can take all 4?

If you had a 109 then yes the 235-85-16s are similar in size to the original 7.50 16s. 88s used narrower rims and shorter tires. Only recently has everyone seemed to start running 109 sized tires on 88s. If one was really a stickler for originality I guess you'd have to hunt down tires in the 6.00X16- 7.00 16 size range. No one seems to like those anymore though because they do look small.

Jac04 - do you know if Sankey trailers used the same wheel?

Sankeys used a 5.00*16 rim, I think it is 231601 That might be a good source for them since no one seems to want original Sankey rims.

I wonder how similar that is to 272309 (early 5x16 LWB wheel)?

Those XCLs are outstanding tires. I'm running XZLs on mine when it leaves the pavement.

Can you post some pics of the split rims? What #s are on them?
