View Full Version : Sewer Cap diff pan ok?
hey everyone, i in the process of rebuilding my 69 bugeye and the rear diff pan is shot, i ground it off and looked for the pipe end cap. my dad knows a guy who works for a company that lays gas lines and he made this up for free. will this work alright. the original has the grove in it and i assume it is there to help the oil get slung on all the parts. this pan is much larger (also much heavier), do you think i have to worry about anthing. this rover will never be ******** off roader so im not worried about the extra overhang. also im doing this rebuild and im on a budget, i would rather have something more appealing but it was free so i can't complain there

Just going to take a bunch more gear oil.:D But then the gear may run cooler with the increased fluid volume. Anyway, the price is right.

I'd probably just paint it red. ;)

It will work. For about $25 you can get an 8" weld on pipe cap (dome shaped cap) that is 1/4" thick, and wont get hung up offroad. That is what I run on most of my trucks.

That is huge!!
I would be concerned about the gear oil when going up a hill running to the back of that cover and not making contact with the ring gear and not slinging oil to the pinion.
you are right about the shape of a diff cover! they are like that so when you do go up a steep hill or are low on fluid it channels the oil to the pinion via the ring gear and keeps the diff lubed.
If you live in the flats I say go for it!
Hey jeff do you have a website or somewhere where you could point me?
for 25 bucks i think id rather that design.
I actually live on a hill so i think i might have to change the design a bit, although the cap is much larger than it needs to be i think i could probally shave an inch or more off with a torch after some carefull measuring, this would keep the oil closer to the gears.
Thanks everyone for your replies, and i had considered a smiley face, not a monkeys *ss though.

You need something like this for 8" pipe. Find a local plumbing supply place and they should be able to get you one.

I don't think you will find a pipe cap for $25, but McMaster has them for $65. Here is a link w/ drawing...

Since the original is stamped steel welded on and you'll need to weld a new one on, why couldn't you buy of of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/GMC-Buick-Chevy-Pontiac-Pickup-Truck-Olds-Rear-Diff-Differential-Cover-/130593812321?hash=item1e67ff6f61&item=130593812321&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr (http://www.ebay.com/itm/GMC-Buick-Chevy-Pontiac-Pickup-Truck-Olds-Rear-Diff-Differential-Cover-/130593812321?hash=item1e67ff6f61&item=130593812321&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr)
remove the flange and weld it on?

The advantage of the pipe cap is that it's virtually bullet proof. No need for a separate diff guard.

I think I paid $30-$35 for mine at my local plumbing wholesaler.. and that's Alaska pricing.

I also paid about $30. That was 3 years ago in Maryland.

"Sewer Cap diff pan " Looks more like a "Top hat diff cover" to me.
