I have never seen this before but pulled the starter out of the carawagon I am building and the spring is broken? Has anyone replaced just this spring?

I've never done one of these type, but many on V-8's. Check and see if the bendix is available as a seperate part. To remove the spring retainer would be asking for trouble, the spring is under a lot of compression and would fly out with pretty good force, and if you did have a spring to replace it with, it would be a buggar to compress back in to put the retainer back on.

I don't remember replacing the spring being difficult or dangerous.

As I noted I've never done THIS type before. So, someone unfamiliar with a job should always be cautious. So, let the man know how it's to be done, experience always tells on jobs.

Remove the retainer pin(cotter pin or perhaps a circlip IIRC). There's no spring pressure there as the spring is broken. Remove the retainer. Remove the broken spring. Clean the shaft while it's apart. Replace spring. Replace retainer. The new spring doesn't need to be compressed a whole lot so there still isn't a lot of force there. Replace retainer pin. The hardest part was finding the replacement spring.
