View Full Version : Noisy?

OK so I know that Land Rovers and diesels in general are noisy but I have no good reference as to how a land rover is supposed to sound. The thing with mine is there seems to be a large amount of noise coming from what sounds like the oil bath air cleaner. I've posted a video on youtube that does a good job demonstraiting this sound as you can hear it puttering throughout the vid.

Any thoughts? Also don't mind the leaky oil in the vid. When I changed the oil today I found that most of the oil pan bolts were so loose you could spin em off by hand. I fixed that issue.

Yes, diesels are noisy through the air induction system.

There seems to be a lot of exhaust noise too.

Nice Land-Rover Santana.
2,25 diesels are noisy, but I'm Sorry to say that your's doesn't sound quite right to me, I got the same motor in mine.
Is the green light on, looked like it in the video, thats the oil pressure warning light. :(

Here is a another 2,25 diesel for you to compare the sound (sorry about the Volvo 960 making some noise in the back ground)
If it's a 5 mb it should sound a little bit smoother.

I just watched the video in the OP. I didn't see the engine itself. Is the intake system fully hooked connected? Are there any exhaust leaks, especially near the engine? Are the valves properly adjusted?

It does sound like exhaust leaks are present. Beyond that it sounds like some top end clatter. Have you done the valve clearance since getting the truck? The metallic clatter sounds like there is a lack of oil somewhere, maybe. It would be worth pulling the valve cover and inspecting, that metallic clatter sounds like trouble. Does the oil pressure gauge work properly?

No, oil gauge seems to be out. It always comes on as soon as you turn the key and I get no pressure reading. Either the senders are bad or the wires are (at least I hope its that simple). Haven't quite troubleshot that yet. I'm gonna disconnect the air intake and see hwo it sounds. The noise seems to be distinctly coming from it as if something inside is hopping around. I can't see any exhaust leaks personally, but thats not to say there isn't one. I just don't see any exhaust smoke or carbon buildups except from the tailpipe itself. I'm gonna be getting new seals for the whole engine/exhaust just to be safe.

You need to get an accurate oil pressure reading. The green low oil pressure light has to go out as soon as the engine has been turned on.
It sounds like the 2,25 diesel that I pulled out of my Series III last summer, just before it died completely. Don't drive it before you are sure of the oil pressure.

Well that might have something to do with it too...the drain plug for the fly wheel housing is missing. Now I gotta source a plug

That is what it should be sounding like (congrats by the way).

Assuming you're referring to the bell housing. The drain plug (correctly referred as the wading plug) is only inserted when fording, driving on beaches, or driving through deep mud.

Hmmm...well I'm getting enough oil out of the drain hole when the rover is running to make a mess on the ground. Symptom of a bad flywheel seal?

Rear main seal if the oil is black.

OK so I pulled the valve cover off...anything in particular I should be seeing? I can't see anything wrong, but then I've never dug into an engine quite like this. I'm clearing the oil off now as best I can.

Is there anything I can adjust here that might fix the noise? As I said I have no experience doing this kind of work, but thats partially why I got it to begin with. I've attached pics.

I'd adjust the valves and change the oil and go for a ride. I don't see much smoke considering what it is. It sounds weird for sure but a lot of that might be the recording. They are noisy, stinky, rattly, filthy, and generally ill mannered.

I would see if you have actual oil pressure with a real gauge or fire it up with the valve cover off and see what kind of mess occurs when you idle it up a bit.

Make sure you have the intake hooked up properly to the air cleaner and that you have the appropriate amount of oil in the aircleaner. They are really loud on the intake and surprising loud without a muffler or with a bad exhaust.

Any update on the oil pressure ?
No or to low oil pressure and you have a dead engine before long, Guess how I know :(

By the way, the oil should be black in a diesel engine. However if there are other particles in the oil it could signal other problems. The only way to know is to get a sample analysed.
