Wind Screen Glass

I'm going to replace the glass on my rover, as it's been sandblasted by road grit over the years, and it's pretty bad.. Is there any reason I can't just order laminated glass from my local glass shop? what is 'Sundym' glass exactly, and should I spring for it or just get something locally.
If I can just order it locally, what thickness is it?

Sundym is nothing special, sometimes it is available tinted. Any local glass place can cut you glass for a LR.

Some States require the D.O.T. marking on the laminate glass. Also "Sundym" is a mild green tint BL cars and then Landrover used on their vehicles

I would check with the relevant Inspection Station.

I think maybe it's wise to just get the glass from RN just for the D.O.T marks on it. As much I hate to ship heavy delicate items into Canada and pay the ridiculous brokerage fee's etc.. I may end up regretting it if I don't.

I noticed that RN has heated windscreens available in this past issue of their advertisement/magazine. If I were replacing them anyway, I might go this route, at least on my driver side.

Heated windscreens are $350 each for ProLine or $550 each for Genuine. OUCH!

I considered the heated ones, but in all honesty, I've never had any trouble with the trucks heater keeping the windows clear. I live in Canada, so we get our fair share of fogged glass in the winter too. heated SEATS though?.. those would be nice! haha.

The glass has the micro wires laminated between the layers like on the Range Rover Classics. Very good quality, shipped well and quickly.

238 UKP = $379 so that's about the same as the RN delivered price, presuming we're talking about the same number of panes. I forget what the group buy price from Ricky Evans ended up being in the end over on the Guns and Rovers board. I think that was a one-time-only deal.

Heated windscreens were a Series factory option starting in 1967. The factory wired them through relays and had a relay & switch for each side. so they could be operated one at a time for those owners with generators.

I've had a pair since about 1994 or so going through a single relay & a single switch (I have an alternator). I love them and would never go back to my Kodiak demister. Works a lot better. You flip the switch & nothing happens. Then after a few minutes, like magic the whole windscreen just clears. Except for a couple inches at the base where there are no wires.

Once you have heated windscreens installed, carry glass insurance on your truck and you will never have to buy another heated windscreen.

And for the earlier comment about heated seats. Did you know that Exmoor trim sells a seat heater kit for installation under new seat covers?

When I converted my Series seats to Defender seats last winter I got the seat heater kit as well. The hardest part is deciding where to put the control switches. Bottom, back, hi and low heat settings. mmmmmmm

I went through Flagstaff about 3 winters ago on a Christmas Break trip to the Grand Canyon. You can really use those heated seats up there! Damn it was cold!

How well do those work over time? The elements don't fail seemingly at random like they do on RRCs do they? That is fricking annoying.:mad:

Mine have been on for about 18 years now and there is what appears to be a 2 adjacent wire width horizontal line where one of the windscreens had a failure. But there is a chip in the windscreen from a flying rock there so it might have been the cause. I got glass insurance after I noticed the problem. If I have had glass insurance then I would have pointed to the chip and the failed heater lines & asked for a free windscreen replacement for that side.
