if you plan on staying over you need to make a reservation. Otherwise if your coming to visit you can just drive up and one of the people staying there can check you in.

I've got a nice pile of fire wood if you want it... VERY dry. I can't camp so if you want it come and get it! (plus you need to see the new place anyway)

I finally spoke to Mike Laddden too and he says he will be there Sunday with his '65. Maybe we can work on another trip?

Today I cleared most of the trails out and they're all ready for the group on saturday (video to come soon). To those not staying over friday night, but are meeting up with us on saturday morning, we will be leaving the campsite (Rocky Neck State Park) for the trails by 9:45 a.m. or you can meet up with us in Voluntown at 10:30 (pm me for the specific location). I am looking forward to seeing some familiar faces as well as some new ones this weekend :thumb-up:

There is a lot more to a winch than it's load rating...

You are right, the new winch has the lowest amp draw on the market ( not including hydro), the gearing is two times larger than the smaller winches, giving better pull for less electrical draw, the new dyneema rope is safer and more user friendly plus weighs in at 57 lbs lighter. Add all this to my military certification as a winching and extrication instructor for 12 years and I thing it is a pretty good package.
Go be a wet blanket some where else

I would love to join everyone at British By the Sea but unfortunately we had planned another camping trip before we knew the date of the show (and before our Rover was road-worthy!). If there are any other events later this year in that general area we would love you join you, otherwise we'll plan on attending the show next year!

Not being a wet blanket- however I am suprised someone with your level of military experience would choose a planetary geared winch. Neither the (United States) military nor the vehicle recovery industry (where my recovery skills come from) would use a planetary geared winch. Worm drive winches are intrinsically safe, and why they are used by the military, recovery companies and recommended by Land Rover. Unfortunately, they tend to be a bit (okay, a LOT) more expensive, and therefore not as popular on 'recreational' vehicles. My vehicles are expected to travel the globe (and do), and the equipment HAS to be reliable.

Ramsey RE series (what I had on my series truck) and the Husky line from Superwinch (on my Defender) are worm drive. There may be others these days, but those I am familiar with, and do or did own. All the wreckers had Ramsey winches (or a huge worm drive PTO winch). Electric, PTO or hydraulic doesn't matter to me, although I prefer electric so the engine does not need to be relied upon to get the truck out of trouble.

My 'wet blanket' opinion does not come without data and experience to back it up, as yours does. I still stand behind my original comment that there is more to a winch than it's load rating. Because it is true.

Please feel free to ignore me and my comments and do enjoy your new winch! Those members here with less experience than you or me may benefit from my comments.

depending who all shows up for the trail ride we may have an opportunity to use the winch saturday. Here is a short teaser video of the trail i cleared yesterday:

slow down you guys.
grrrr.
is it true a snatch block can double the load of the winch?
i dont have a lot of winching experience.
i have a little 8000 smittybuilt winch
but can use it till i get my new chassis in july.
it'll rip the frame horns right off.
aaron

J!m
06-01-2012, 07:25 AM
Yes, Aaron. Doubling the line with a block doubles the load the winch can move (and halves the winching speed as well). I carry one in my box of recovery gear.

It, as well as your connecting shackles etc., should be properly rated for the full load. If the frame is rotten, well I have seen a frame ripped apart on a series while winching. Actually Jeff S. was there too I believe. (it was Al C.'s truck) and ironically it was the Saturday before Harkness several years ago (none of our group made it to the show).

I went with the bfg km2's in the 33x10.5 size. No complaints thus far, they perform flawlessly in the woods, and are a huge improvement over my old tsl's on the road.
