So I had pulled up to a store to do my usual wheeling and dealings when a fella comes out and tries to buy the Rover. I tell him no way and he goes on to tell me that he has owned 4 different Series throughout the years. He then goes on to say that he has some manuals left and would I like to come into his shop to look at them.Being a Rover guy of course I look then buy them. Problem is I don't recognize them from the looking around the board(s). They didn't look like the green bible but he says its what the dealers used, mind you each one is more than an inch thick. They seem to be quite complete with explaining what every part is and how to remove and reinstall and refurbish. The dark one has "Land Rover" and "Series III" pressed into a hardcover binder in gold lettering. Any help?

P.S. He also gave me an "Aluminum Workhorse" magazine from winter 1993 and the Haynes manual for Series 2, 2a,3. I hear the Haynes manual is not that good though

I think you did well, these are the hard to find dealer's books (Shop Manuals) and more detailed than the Green Bible. The size of them might tell you that. The parts catalogue should be most helpful. The leatherette one is what we call an owner's manual. I envision some friends wanting to borrow your books. (My Range Rover shop manual, without the parts manual, cost me $150.)

The green bible = workshop manual, the actual colors changed over the years. To my thinking the workshop manuals pts 1&2 and the parts manual all make up the parts of "the bible" for series Rovers.

OK. Glad to help.

You have been seriously ripped off. This book is entirely wrong and will lead you into all kinds of problems.

I think you need to send it to me so I can dispose of it safely (I will pay postage if you like).

LMAO,

I laughed so hard. In the previous post I was told it was an owners manual, but its has instructions throughout of how to repair and replace everything, almost like a service manual. Is that what the owners manual was?

The owner's manual is something quite different and concentrates on how to check the oil and water, change light bulbs, etc.

This is a workshop manual.

I see them around sometimes and know of ummmm four companies that have them on their shelves, plus those for other LR models.

The Haynes manual is a cut down version of this. I don't use the Haynes book, I use the workshop manual instead. The paper versions were eventually replaced by the RAVE CDs.

PS. Still offering to pay postage. A little knowledge will be very very OMG like soooo dangerous.

I just trade those books for a new 45D distributor for my series 3. I had those book but did not have the Series 1 that goes with it.... Should I have asked more than a new distributor?

Eh they are worth what you can get for them. I'd say yes but only because I think I have 3 spare distributers,

Unfortunately those manuals don't translate easily over to Kiwi... luckily I have a good friend here who is fluent and said he'd be happy to provide a complete translation for you. So those will have to be sent to Boston for further inspection, please.

The ones in the OP (less the operators manual) are the ones I have. I bought them new in the 70's.
My SIII manual (also bought in the 70's) is loose leaf in a vinyl binder similar in texture to the operators manual pictured.

Your thoughtfulness astounds me. But really, you don't need to worry. In Kiwiania, we speak the Queen's English. The same kind used in those awful books. The black one should come straight here.

Actually, the others might need further decontamination in Boston.

The best thing is that they have more detailed instuctions than the green bible. telling what tools you need and a much more detailed progression of repairs. Another item that is most useful is that the parts book noted all the girling, lucas, timken bearing numbers etc that were deleted on later versions. also the parts catalog exploded diagrams will assist you in puting thingss back together. the drawings are very detailed, making it easy to see which way a part should be on reassembly. keep them safe.. rove on, bobzinak

What would a fella have to pay for a set of these white books if they were to be found?
