    Weber "Pop"

Upon cold starting (how cold could it be in Los Angeles) - I get a pop (backfire) in the location of the carb and the engine wants to shut down. After it warms up, this seems to go away for the most part. This happens also when de-accellerating on an off ramp from the highway occasionally. Before I go hunting for a vacuum leak or play around with air mixture - any directional/specific advice?

    Timing right?

Are you using a choke at any of these stages?

You never want to mess around with the carb unless everything is prefect. It will just make a hassle to figure out whats wrong and mask the real problem.

      1. Is ignition timing correct?
      2. Are valve clearances correct?
      3. Any vacuum and/or exhaust leaks?
Only then start adjusting the carb. I've recently gone through a similar situation. Do 1-3 first.

Backfiring in and around the carb is a lean mix backfire.. I would check the carb to manifold gasket, might be done. Make sure air mix is correct,
